2018 Winterbottom Stakes Day Preview

Race 1 - 3:55pm

TABTOUCH Handicap (1000m)

This is a tricky way to start the day for punters and there are a host of winning chances. This isn’t a race that I am overly keen to get invested in, but Zuccheros is a horse that does appeal at single-figure odds. He hasn’t really fired this campaign, but the fact that he is being dropped back to 1000 metres is a positive. This really isn’t a particularly strong race and the $12 currently available is well and truly over the odds.

Race 2 - 4:36pm

Crystal Slipper Stakes (1100m)

The market suggests that this is a race in two between Specialism and Jericho Missile. Specialism has recorded two wins from as many race starts and there is no doubt that she is a filly with plenty of talent. She will go straight to the front in the early stages and she will prove very tough to run down.

The unknown in this race is Jericho Missile. He has recorded two barrier trial wins in very impressive fashion and if he brings that sort of form to the races, he will be right in this contest. This is a race that the market does look to have just about right and I am happy to stay out from a betting perspective.

Race 3 - 5:16pm

Crown Towers Handicap (1400m)

Arcadia Prince has opened as a short-priced favourite and there is no doubt that he is the horse to beat. He has recorded two wins from three race starts this campaign and he really should be three from three. William Pike will be able to give him a dream run in transit from barrier three and he is a horse that still has upside. He is deserving of his status as a short-priced favourite.

Race 4 - 6:00pm

Amelia Park Handicap (1500m)

Platoon has opened as a short-priced favourite on the back of his run in the Western Australian Guineas last Saturday, but I can’t get him anywhere near as short as his current price of $2.25. Deception Game at $7.50 is well and truly over the odds. He started his campaign with three straight wins and he hasn’t been disgraced in his past two race starts. Barrier four is ideal for him and he maps to get the run of the race. This is his chance to return to winning form and he is excellent value to do just that.

Race 5 - 6:35pm

Furphy Handicap (1500m)

Royal Command is another horse that does seem well and truly under the odds at his current price of 1.95. It has been a while between race wins and he is a horse that has never really lived up to his early potential. The issue is that outside of him, there are countless winning chances in this race and it is very difficult to bet into this race with any confidence.

Race 6 - 7:10pm

Regional Championship (1200m)

Bon Voyage has been set for this contest and he does look like the horse to beat in the Regional Championship. He won well at Bunbury a couple of starts ago and he had no luck in running whatsoever at Northam last start. The wide barrier draw does mean that he will get a long way back in the run, but that is his usual racing pattern and that will ensure that he gets a clear run at his rivals. He has the turn-of-foot to finish over the top of his rivals.

Race 7 - 7:50pm

Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m)

Viddora won the Winterbottom Stakes 12 months ago and she ticks all the boxes for this race again in 2018. Her first-up victory in the Moir Stakes at The Valley was nothing short of outstanding and she had genuine excuses when she failed to fire in The Everest – neither the wet track or the slow tempo suited her. The fact that she goes into the Winterbottom Stakes fresh is a big positive and her barrier trial at Cranbourne, ahead of this race, was excellent. Barrier five should be perfect for her and I don’t think that there is any doubt she is the class galloper in this field.

The main danger is Voodoo Lad. He didn’t have the race run to suit in the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes and his form before that has been good. I like the fact that he has been freshened up for this race and he has been close at Group 1 level in the past. He will get a long way back from the wide barrier draw, but he is a high-rating performer on his day and he can be in the finish at nice odds.

Race 8 - 8:30pm

Tourism WA Trophy (1100m)

Illustrious Tycoon has recorded three wins from as many race starts and there is no reason that he can’t continue his winning ways. It has been a long time between race starts, but he won a barrier trial in impressive fashion ahead of his racing return and on exposed form he has a clear class edge over the rest of this field.

Race 9 - 9:05pm

Glenroy Chaff Handicap (2100m)

Magical Charm has improved each time that she has been stepped up in distance this campaign and, once again, I am with William Pike in the final race of the day at Ascot. She has showed a lovely turn-of-foot to win her past two race starts and she should now be at peak fitness third-up. Barrier three is ideal for her and she could prove too strong for the rest of this field late.
