2019 Chinese New Year Race Night Preview

Alinta Energy Geothermal Plate (1600m) - Race 1 6:30pm

There is no speed whatsoever in this contest and it would not surprise to see Damien Oliver attempt to take control of this race on Tower Road. He has raced well without winning during his racing career to date and the form coming out of his last start at Pakenham has been strong. There is no reason that he can’t win what is a fairly weak race.

Otis Foundation Sprint Series Heat 4 (1200m) - Race 2 7:00pm

It is no surprise that Greyworm has opened this contest as a short-priced favourite. He has recorded three wins from his four race starts and he went to another level when he returned to the races with a dominant win at The Valley a fortnight ago. Dwayne Dunn will be able to settle him right on the speed and there is no doubt that he is the horse to beat.

Sarah’s Dream Handicap (1000m) - Race 3 7:30pm

Fine Dane impressed during his maiden racing campaign and trainer John Moloney has found a lovely race to kick him off in. He has form around the likes of Written By, Beauty and Feared Eyes and there are no horses of that quality in this field. 1000 metres does suit him and he can make a winning return to the races.

Alinta Energy Sprint (1000m) - Race 4 8:00pm

The market has zeroed in on Bleu Roche and Humma Humma and they do look like the two horses to beat. Bleu Roche finished her Spring campaign with an excellent win in the Roses Stakes at Flemington and she is a filly that still has plenty of upside. The Valley does seem ideal for her and Ben Melham should be able to either take her to the front or sit just outside the leader. It would not surprise to see her end up in stronger races than this one.

Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge Heat 12 (955m) - Race 5 8:30pm

Henry Dwyer has been one of the form trainers of 2019 to date and he can record another race win with Mister Mogul in the Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge. He could hardly have been more impressive when he bolted in at Yarra Valley last start and he clearly has oodles of early speed. Georgina Cartwright can take him straight to the front and he will prove tough to run down.

Chinese New Year Cup (2500m) - Race 6 9:00pm

Top Of The Range is not a horse that wins out of turn, but this might be his opportunity to return to winning form. He wasn’t beaten far by The Gatting Ball over this track and distance last start and he should take good benefit from that performance. The wide barrier draw isn’t ideal, but there should be as big a gap between him and Creedence as there currently is in the market.

Pinchapoo Handicap (2040m) - Race 7 9:30pm

Crimson Tears has been transferred from Darren Weir to Lindsay Park, which does bring some unknowns, but she is still the horse to beat in this contest. She has been racing well without winning in her past three race starts, but this is a genuine drop in quality and she should now be at peak fitness. Barrier one is ideal for her and she maps to get a lovely trail into this contest.

Alinta Energy Handicap (1200m) - Race 8 10:00pm

This is a tough way to finish the night for punters. This isn’t a race that I am overly keen to get invested in as there are simply too many winning chances, but Atlantic Express is a horse in career best form. He has recorded two wins on the trot and his last start victory at Yarra Valley was outstanding. He will make his own luck right on the speed and give a good sight.
