It was an early start to round six and an early fill-up for punters. Richmond was already a heavily backed favourite but, when promotional odds of $2.50 were put up on the Tigers against Melbourne on Wednesday night, many saw it as a gift from the punting gods. It was an early black hole for the bookies to try and dig out of but, with the weekend going to script, it was a hole they ultimately stayed in.
One client had even more reason to cheer the yellow and black home after outlaying $100,000 on Richmond -13.5. A result which yielded him a cool $90,000 profit.
Whilst Collingwood was a well backed favourite in the ANZAC Day clash with the Bombers, the closeness of the result actually made it a winner for the bookies. Expected to cover a relatively skinny 8.5-point line with ease, the eventual four-point result proved costly for punters.
FIRST GOAL FILL UP
Not only did the Tigers give bettors and early bank in the opening match of the round, Tom Lynch kick started it all with the first goal of the round. The former Suns skipper has been good to first goal punters this season and again proved a smart bet, saluting at $8.
A case of a punter backing his tips but with a difference, as said punter took all the winners straight out bar one.
Believing Carlton would be competitive, he took the Blues +20 @ $1.90 rather than the Hawks straight out at $1.36. His nine-leg multi came in at $45.79 meaning his $50 investment returned a healthy $2289.76.
BACKING THE FUTURE
Having turned what appeared a horrible looking opening six weeks of the season into a 5-1 record, the ladder-leading Cats are now perfectly positioned for a top-two finish and are the outright premiership favourite with Ladbrokes. Their latest victim, reigning premiers West Coast, the most significant drifter in the round six wash-up.
