The 2019 Kennedy Oaks headlines big day of racing at Flemington on Thursday and 15 fillies will contest the Group 1 event.
There is no standout filly in the Kennedy Oaks field and this is one of the more open editions of the race that we have seen in recent years.
We have analysed every single horse in the field and our complete 2019 Kennedy Oaks tips can be found below.
Miami Bound went to the top of Kennedy Oaks betting following her narrow win over Vegas Jewel in the Wakeful Stakes at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day. She looked beaten for all money when Vegas Jewel loomed on her outside, but she just kept on fighting to record a tough victory. The question is now whether she will handle the step-up to 2500 metres and I am not convinced, but she deserves to be in the mix.
Moonlight Maid showed her quality with a win at big odds in the Edward Manifold Stakes and she proved that effort was no fluke with a second place finish behind Soul Patch in the Moonee Valley Vase. She did seem to die on her run somewhat late in the Kennedy Oaks and there might be some query at the 2500 metres, but she is a filly that is heading in the right direction.
Gamay has been freshened-up since she scored a narrow win over Vegas Jewel in the Ethereal Stakes at Caulfield on Caulfield Cup Day. There is no doubt that she received the run of the race in the Ethereal Stakes, but she was good before that in the Kennedy Oaks Trial and she is heading in the right direction.
Vegas Jewel is the horse to beat in what is a very open edition of the Kennedy Oaks. She really should have won when she finished second behind Gamay in the Ethereal Stakes and I’m still not sure how she didn’t run down Miami Bound in the Wakeful Stakes. She has drawn a wide barrier, but she gets back in the run anyway. The Shocking filly gives the impression that she is looking for the step-up in trip and she will be tough to hold out late.
Foxborough was flattered by her third place finish behind Funstar and Probabell in the Flight Stakes at Group 1 level. She was beaten as favourite in her next race start at Newcastle before she was soundly beaten in the Wakeful Stakes. Her trainer John Sargent does have an excellent record in the Crown Oaks, but that is the only real reason to have any optimism.
Silent Sovereign is another filly that comes out of the Wakeful Stakes. She found the line fairly in the concluding stages and she does look as though she will appreciate the step-up in trip. In saying that, I’m not sure that she has the class to win a race of this quality.
Presently was soundly beaten in both the Edward Manifold Stakes and the Ethereal Stakes. She is one of the extreme outsiders in this field for a reason.
This is a sharp step-up in trip for Beauty Bolt following her fifth place finish in the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic on Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day. That is far for the best set-up for a race like the Kennedy Oaks and because of that I am happy to take her on at her current odds of $13.
This is a big step-up in class for Amazing Peace after she won at Newcastle last start. The factor that she does have in her favour is the fact that she has had a race start over 2380 metres and she does map to get a lovely run in transit with Nash Rawiller in the saddle. It would not surprise to see her show some cheek at $31.
Never Listen was soundly beaten by Amazing Peace at Newcastle before she recorded a dominant eight lengths win at Scone last start. This is obviously a huge step-up in class and I can’t see why she she opened at a shorter price than Amazing Peace.
John Sadler has been very bullish about Song Brocade this campaign, but she hasn’t really delivered. She finished a credible fifth in the Ethereal Stakes, but she was beaten by more than ten lengths in the Wakeful Stakes last start. It is tough to back her in the Kennedy Oaks on the back of that performance.
Ocean Miss finished a credible fourth in both the Kennedy Oaks Trial and the Ethereal Stakes. She does make her own luck on the speed and it would not surprise to see Michael Walker ride her aggressively in the early stages of this race. $26 does seem around the right price.
Apicius finished at the tail of the field after leading in the Wakeful Stakes. She did have some excuses, but it is very tough to back her in the Kennedy Oaks on the back of that effort.
Stick ‘Em Up
Stick ‘Em Up comes into the Kennedy Oaks on the back of a win at Canberra last start. This is obviously a huge step-up in class, but John Sargent has won this race with lightly-raced fillies in the past.
They could make another movie if Michelle Payne is able to ride AND train the winner of the Kennedy Oaks. Victory Approach has never shown anything to suggest that she is up to a race of this quality, so that seems unlikely.
