2019 Pakenham Cup Day Preview

John Duff & Co BM70 (1000m) - Race 1 12:55pm

That Girl hasn’t been seen at the races since June and has only had one career start so far, but she looks an above-average galloper and can make a winning return on Pakenham Cup Day. The three-year-old daughter of Sizzling showed ability at the trials prior to her debut run and franked that when an easy winner at Morphettville; beating home the likes of Garner. A repeat of that effort would see her too good for these rivals.

Momentum Gaming BM70 Handicap (1600m) - Race 2 1:30pm

Write Your Name has been good since resuming and strikes another very winnable race on Pakenham Cup Day. The four-year-old son of Written Tycoon was far too good for another BM70 field at Bendigo when resuming and was last seen finishing third over 1400m at Ladbrokes Park. The step up to a mile looks perfect at this point of his preparation and he has options from the rails draw.

Fulmen Park F&M Handicap (1400m) - Race 3 2:05pm

Lady Of Crebilly was flat when she resumed at Ballarat a fortnight ago, but there’s little doubt that she’ll enjoy improvement from the hit-out and I am happy to give her another chance at a double-figure price. The Phillip Stokes-trained mare was an excellent horse for the stable last time in; recording consecutive wins here at Pakenham and ending her prep third in a Group 3 race. She’s drawn to receive a lovely ride and looks a live chance in what is a wide-open race.

Iron Jack Lagers BM78 Handicap (2000m) - Race 4 2:40pm

Mangione has continued to improve with racing this time and can return to the winner’s stall in the fourth on Pakenham Cup Day. The Fiorente entire was too good for his rivals at Gosford three back and has continued to impress as Chris Waller has raised the bar; placing third in BM78 company at Rosehill and second over 2000m last time out. He’s at peak fitness for this race and will be hard to hold out.

Hanson Handicap (1600m) - Race 5 3:20pm

Al Passem was an impressive winner at Listed level last time out and looks a touch of overs to win the fifth on Pakenham Cup Day. The Ken Keys-trained gelding has continued to improve with racing this time, but his last-start effort suggested that he has found peak condition and I can’t find a reason why he won’t be in the finish again. Market favourite Odeon is a bit of a non-winner and I am happy to take him on again.

Schweppes David Bourke Memorial Handicap (1200m) - Race 6 4:00pm

It has been four weeks between races for More Than Exceed and that could prove the difference in a return to winning form. The More Than Ready gelding finished off the pace of Tactical Advantage in a Listed race on Cup Day, but his form prior to that was outstanding; recording three wins and a close-up second from four starts. Luke Nolen takes the ride at 54.5gs and with appropriate luck, he’ll be hard to beat.

Listed Pakenham Cup (2500m) - Race 7 4:40pm

Secret Blaze has returned to the races in career-best form this time and is a fitting favourite in Pakenham Cup betting. The four-year-old son of Sizzling hit the line well to finish third in fair company at Geelong when resuming and has since won a pair of Saturday metro races, including a BM90 over the Cox Plate trip at The Valley last weekend. He’s in peak order for this race and will take beating.

Creedence has been a strong and consistent performer this time and could prove over the odds at his current price ($7 at publish). The Helmet gelding has finished outside of the places only once in his last six starts and was last seen winning over 2600m at Ballarat.

VOBIS Gold Bullion (1400m) - Race 8 5:20pm

These high-paying Vobis races at Widgee Turf’s bread and butter and he looks to be the horse to beat again on Saturday. The Turffontein gelding interestingly hasn’t won since resuming in September, but he has returned several typically strong performances, including a third placing in Group 1 company and a close-up second in Vobis Gold Star. He’s rock-hard fit and at his best, has an edge over these rivals.

Kangaroo Race BM78 Handicap (1000m) - Race 9 5:55pm

Propelle looked a run short when she resumed at The Valley, but she’s a horse that typically enjoys good improvement with one under her belt and she can return to winning form in the last on Pakenham Cup Day. The Smart Missile mare was a strong and consistent performer last time in and has recorded three wins and as many minors through only eleven career starts. She is drawn well and weighted to win.
