On This Day – April 23

They say we should use this time to learn something new – so we thought we’d offer up a history lesson free of charge!

We’re going to be recapping all the important sporting moments each and every day as we look to fill the void our beloved sports and teams have left behind.

So if it’s AFL, NRL, Basketball, Cricket, Golf or even Wrestling, be sure to return each and every morning as we take a trip back through the history books to relive some of sports‘ greatest moments.

2013 – Chris Gayle’s 30 Ball Century

Playing in the Indian Premier League for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chris Gayle took just 30 balls to break the record for what is still the fastest century in the history of Cricket.

Gayle scored 11 sixes, eight fours along with four singles and just seven dot balls.

His opponents, the Pune Warriors were rocked as Gayle hit beast mode – including hitting four sixes in one over.

Gayle’s ball-by-ball scorecard on the day read as follows:

001440

440416

640664

616066

466016

AB De Villiers achieved a 101 score with 31 balls in 2017 against the West Indies, with Gayle holding the record by one ball.

2011 – Gold Coast Suns Win Their First Game

The Gold Coast Suns staged a stunning 43-point turnaround and went on to defeat Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium (Football Park) by three points – the club’s historic first win on this day nine years ago.

Port Adelaide was leading by 40 points late in the third quarter but the Suns led by Micheal Rischitelli, Gary Ablett along with David Sallow and Charlie Dixon kicked six goals to Port’s one in the final quarter to find themselves in front with only two minutes to play.

When the final siren rang, Port’s Justin Westhoff had the chance to win the game with a shot at goal after the siren, the kick missed and the Suns celebrated their first-ever win in only their fourth AFL game.

Many expected the Gold Coast Suns not to win anything in their first year, but the clubs first win over Port Adelaide still remains one of their finest moments.

1921 – St.George Play Their First Game

Fittingly on St George’s Day in 1921, St George played their first game in the NSWRFL at the Sydney Sports Ground.

The Saints were beaten by Glebe 4-3 in according to match reports at the time “not remarkable for brilliancy”

George Carstairs holds the honour of scoring the very first Try for the famous club.

As a stand-alone team, St George won 16 premierships, including the famous 11 straight from 1956-66.

The club would merge with the Illawarra Steelers to become St George-Illawarra in 1999.
