On This Day: April 29

They say we should use this time to learn something new – so we thought we’d offer up a history lesson free of charge!

We’re going to be recapping all the important sporting moments each and every day as we look to fill the void our beloved sports and teams have left behind.

So if it’s AFL, NRL, Basketball, Cricket, Golf or even Wrestling, be sure to return each and every morning as we take a trip back through the history books to relive some of sports’ greatest moments.

1986 – Clemens K’s 20

Seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens struck out 20 Mariners on this day in 1986 in Boston’s 3-1 victory over Seattle.

Only six players in Major League history have ever struck out 20 batters or more in a single game, with the most recent being Mac Scherzer in 2016.

Clemens would equal his record 10-years later with another 20 strikeout game against the Detroit Tigers.

2012 – Down Goes Derrick

Derrick Rose’s comeback is sometimes forgotten, so it’s worth remembering that on this day in 2012, the youngest MVP in the history of the NBA tore his ACL in Game 1 of the first round of the playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Rose would miss the entire 2012-13 season as a result before returning to the Bulls in lacklustre fashion. He averaged only 15.9 points-per-game in the 2013 season, before being traded to the Knicks three years later.

Rose has since bounced around the league but looks to have found his groove again in Detroit. With the season still paused, the 2011 MVP is averaging 18 points a game with the Pistons.

2012 – The Saints Go Marching In

Southampton was promoted to the Premier League on this day in 2012 in front of a jam-packed crowd at St Mary’s.

The Saints defeated Coventry City 4-0 at home to finish runner-up to Reading on the table. Aside from the game, the most memorable moment came when almost all of the 32,000+ in attendance rushed the field.

Happy Birthday To…

  • Andre Agassi, who turns 50 today!
  • 2008 Pro Bowler and the man Bears fans love to hate, Jay Cutler!
  • And finally, staying in Chicago, three-time Stanley Cup Champion Jonathan Toews, who turns 32!
