On This Day: May 1

They say we should use this time to learn something new – so we thought we’d offer up a history lesson free of charge!

We’re going to be recapping all the important sporting moments each and every day as we look to fill the void our beloved sports and teams have left behind.

So if it’s AFL, NRL, Basketball, Cricket, Golf or even Wrestling, be sure to return each and every morning as we take a trip back through the history books to relive some of sports’ greatest moments.

1988 – More From Mike

This week’s episode of ‘The Last Dance’ covered the 1988 NBA Playoffs extensively, so you might recall Michael Jordan scoring 55-points on this day 32-years ago in the Bulls’ Game 2 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Jordan was no stranger to putting up 50+ totals during this time, but this one was a little different. After scoring 50-points in Chicago’s Game 1 loss, Jordan’s 55-points in Game 2 made him the first player in NBA history to score 50+ points in back-to-back playoff games.

1991 – Seven of the Very Best

Plenty happened in baseball on this day, but nothing trumps Nolan Ryan throwing his seventh career no-hitter in the Rangers’ 3-0 win over the Blue Jays.

Ryan was already a sure-fire Hall of Famer by this point, but he cemented his legacy even further by becoming the oldest pitcher in Major League history to throw a no-hitter at 44 years of age.

2019 – Messi600

This time last year Barcelona was in the driver’s seat in the first leg of the Champions League having defeated Liverpool 3-0 at Camp Nou.

The star of the show was Lionel Messi, who scored twice – the second being his 600th goal on a dazzling 35-yard free kick in the 81st minute. Barcelona would go on to lose 4-0 at Anfield six days later, however, but more on that next week.
