On This Day: May 8

They say we should use this time to learn something new – so we thought we’d offer up a history lesson free of charge!

We’re going to be recapping all the important sporting moments each and every day as we look to fill the void our beloved sports and teams have left behind.

So if it’s AFL, NRL, Basketball, Cricket, Golf or even Wrestling, be sure to return each and every morning as we take a trip back through the history books to relive some of sports’ greatest moments.

1970 – New York, New York

The Knicks were on top of the world on this day in 1970 after defeating Wilt Chamberlain and the Lakers 113-99 in Game 7 of the Finals to win their first NBA title.

Willis Reed, who averaged 23 points in the series, was crowned Finals MVP. He was later crowned as the NBA’s Most Valuable Player of the 1970 season before helping the Knicks to a second title three years later.

2013 – Sir Alex Steps Down

Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement as of the end of Manchester United’s season on this day in 2013.

The outpouring of sadness and praise was felt right across the country, but the Red Devils wasted no time appointing David Moyes as Ferguson’s replacement a day later.

Ferguson would then go on to manage his final game the very next day with United drawing 5-5 at West Brom.
