On This Day: May 11

They say we should use this time to learn something new – so we thought we’d offer up a history lesson free of charge!

We’re going to be recapping all the important sporting moments each and every day as we look to fill the void our beloved sports and teams have left behind.

So if it’s AFL, NRL, Basketball, Cricket, Golf or even Wrestling, be sure to return each and every morning as we take a trip back through the history books to relive some of sports’ greatest moments.

Today was actually a massive day in the history of baseball, and it all started out with future Dodgers Hall Of Famer, Sandy Koufax, tossing his second career no-hitter in a 2-9 victory over the New York Giants.

This was also the same day that saw legendary outfielder Willie Mays traded to the Mets in 1972, and one of television’s most powerful men, Ted Turner, actually manage an Atlanta Braves came in 1977.

Not to be outdone, Pete Rose stole second, third and home all in a single inning on this day in 1980 as a member of the Phillies.

2013 – Wigan Out

Today is the day just about everybody became a temporary Wigan Athletic fan.

The FA Cup Final seemed a foregone conclusion in 2013, but little did we know The Lactics had a surprise in store that would shock the world.

Wigan Athletic defeated Manchester City 1-0 to win their first-ever FA Cup, a well-deserved result after shutting out Everton in the sixth round and Millwall in the Semi’s.
