They say we should use this time to learn something new – so we thought we’d offer up a history lesson free of charge!
We’re going to be recapping all the important sporting moments each and every day as we look to fill the void our beloved sports and teams have left behind.
So if it’s AFL, NRL, Basketball, Cricket, Golf or even Wrestling, be sure to return each and every morning as we take a trip back through the history books to relive some of sports’ greatest moments.
2001 – Michael Owen 2 – Arsenal 1
Liverpool claimed their sixth FA Cup trophy on this day in 2001 defeating Arsenal 2-1 in Cardiff.
Thierry Henry had a chance to put the Gunners ahead early, but his shot was deflected wide on what he claimed to be a handball. Arsenal would grab the lead late in the second half on a goal from Fredrik Ljungberg, but little did he know Michael Owen had other ideas.
The legendary Liverpool striker would score twice in the 83rd and 88th minute to seal a victory for the Reds. They went on to add another FA Cup to the trophy cabinet four years later with an extra-time win over West Ham.
2013 – Woods Back On Top at TPC
Twelve years after winning his first Players Championship in 2001, Tiger Woods was back on top at TPC Sawgrass on this day in 2013 where he finished two strokes ahead of David Lingmerth, Jeff Maggert and Kevin Streelman.
Woods was made to sweat it out on the final hole when Lingmerth had a chance to tie with a birdie. Unfortunately, the fellow American sent his tee shot into the rough and never recovered.
The win also came on Tiger’s 300th PGA Tour start and placed him alongside Jack Nicklaus, Fred Couples, Steve Elkington, Hal Sutton and David Love III as the only golfers to win two or more Players Championships.
