On This Day: May 19

They say we should use this time to learn something new – so we thought we’d offer up a history lesson free of charge!

We’re going to be recapping all the important sporting moments each and every day as we look to fill the void our beloved sports and teams have left behind.

So if it’s AFL, NRL, Basketball, Cricket, Golf or even Wrestling, be sure to return each and every morning as we take a trip back through the history books to relive some of sports’ greatest moments.

2012 – The Munich Marvel

On this day eight years ago, football fans were left stunned as Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich 4-3 in penalties to become the first London-based club to win the UEFA Champions League Final.

The Blues were tasked with the impossible – a trip to Munich’s Allianz Arena.

After a scoreless first half, the hosts found the lead on a Thomas Muller goal, which went on to spark a mighty Chelsea comeback. Didier Drogba equalised to send the game to extra-time, eventually leading to goalie Petr Cech’s heroics not once, but twice.

2019 – Koepka Goes Back to Back

2019 saw Tiger Woods complete of the greatest comeback stories in sport by winning the Masters, but it also saw Brooks Koepka follow in the great one’s footsteps by winning back-to-back PGA Championships.

A year after finishing two strokes ahead of Tiger at Bellerive, Koepka led all the way at Bethpage to finish two strokes ahead of Dustin Johnson.

To be fair, it was a nervous wait for Koepka fans as the world No. 1 bogeyed five of the final eight holes. The American held on however to become a four-time major champion.
