1997 – A Rocket to 200
Roger Clemens has featured heavily on our lists recently, largely because he accomplished so many milestones around this time in his 23-year career.
On this day in 1997, ‘The Rocket’ earned his 200th win as a member of the Blue Jays in a victory over his soon to be team, the New York Yankees.
Clemens retired with 354 wins next to his name, which remains the ninth-highest win total in Major League history.
2008 – Moscow Turns Red
Manchester United won the UEFA Champions League on this day in 2008 with a thrilling 6-5 penalty shootout win over Chelsea in Moscow.
Both sides traded blows in regular time but couldn’t be separated at 1-1. Extra time proved no help, but Ryan Giggs sure did when he slotted the game-winning goal in penalties to secure the Red Devils their third European Cup.
