On This Day: May 29

They say we should use this time to learn something new – so we thought we’d offer up a history lesson free of charge!

So if it’s AFL, NRL, Basketball, Cricket, Golf or even Wrestling, be sure to return each morning as we take a trip back through the history books to relive some of the great sporting moments On This Day.

1980 – Word to Big Bird

The rivalry between Larry Bird and Magic Johnson began in their college days and ran right through their storied NBA careers, but on this day in 1980, Indiana’s finest forward got the upper hand.

Bird was crowned the NBA’s Rookie of the Year ahead of Magic after averaging 21.3 points and 10.4 rebounds during the 1979-80 season.

For reference, Magic wasn’t far behind averaging 18 points and seven rebounds.

2010 – Pitcher Perfect

If you aren’t familiar with the story of Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay, look it up, it’s very inspiring.

On this day in 2010 the Phillies’ righty became only the 20th pitcher in Major League history to throw a perfect game, blanking the Marlins in a tidy 1-0 defeat.

Halladay went on to create further history during the postseason by becoming the first player to throw a no-hitter in the playoffs.
