2011 – Reds Letter Day
The Queensland Reds took out their first (and only) Super Rugby title of the professional era with a thrilling 18-3 win over the Crusaders.
It was a day the 52,000 fans at the sold-out Suncorp Stadium will never forget.
Both sides were locked in at 13-13 with 12 minutes left in the match but an outstanding solo try from Will Genia saw the Reds come home with the goods resulting in one of the great upsets.
The Reds joined the ACT Brumbies who took the title in 2001 and 2004 as the only Australian winners of the Super Rugby competition at the time.
The NSW Warrathas would go on to be the next Australian franchise to take out the Super Rugby title in 2014.
1994 – Bill Harrigan Sends Off Gus Gould
One of the more infamous moments in Rugby League history occured on this day in 1994.
Penrith Panthers coach Phil “Gus” Gould was sent off from his seat on the sideline to the dressing room by referee Bill Harrigan.
Constant bickering and feuding between the two became that heated that Harrigan pulled rank and decided to give Gus his marching orders during the game.
For the record, Cronulla thumped the Panthers 32-0 at Shark Park.
