This Day: July 13

They say we should use this time to learn something new – so we thought we’d offer up a history lesson free of charge!

We’re going to be recapping all the important sporting moments each and every day as we look to fill the void our beloved sports have left behind.

So if it’s AFL, NRL, Basketball, Cricket, Golf or even Wrestling, be sure to return each morning as we take a trip back through the history books to relive some of the great sporting moments On This Day.

1979 – Gower Goes for the Double

We don’t like celebrating England’s cricketing achievements too often, but David Gower deserves a shoutout here having scored a double century on this day in 1979.

Gower was widely regarded as one of the most stylish left-handed batsman in cricket, so it was no surprise to watch him hit 24 fours off only 279 balls in just his second year of Test cricket.

2012 – Drew Brees Signs Big

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs reached a record-breaking $477 million 10-year contract last week, but it was Drew Brees who laid down the foundations for those kinds of figures on this day in 2012.

After leading the Saints to their first  Super Bowl ring three years earlier, Brees set a new NFL record at the time by signing a five-year, $100 million extension with $60 million guaranteed.

Brees recently signed a two-year extension back in March worth another $50 million – a handy collect for one of the league’s richest players.
