2019 – Steve Smith’s Twin Ashes Century
Steve Smith became only the 4th batsman of all-time to score more than 140 runs in each innings of a Test match in a stunning display during the first Ashes Test in Edgbaston.
In his return Test after being sidelined for 16 months, Smith continued his dominance over England and let his batting do the talking after being subject to a chorus of booing from the English crowd.
It was from a textbook cover drive from Stuart Broad that brought up the milestone.
Smith removed his helment, saluted his teammates and shared a massive embrace with fellow batsmen Matthew Wade.
The English crowd gave the booing a rest to stand an applaud Smith’s phenomenal achievement.
He became the first batsmen to score a twin Ashes century since Matthew Hayden’s 197/193 in Brisbane during the first Test of the 2002-03 series, and the first one since Steve Waugh’s 108 and 116 at Old Trafford back in 1997.
Steve Smith joined an exclusive club of Australian’s to score twin centuries in an Ashes Test joining the likes of Arthur Morris (Adelaide 1947), Warren Bardsley (The Oval 1909) along with Steve Waugh and Matthew Hayden.
Along with his second innings hundred, Smith took his total of Ashes tons to 10 – equal second with Steve Waugh for the most by an Australian.
Sir Donald Bradman holds the record for either nation when it comes to Centuries in an Ashes Test with 19.
It would be the first of much Steve Smith magic for the 2019 Ashes series.
2013 – Monfries Freak Goal in Epic Showdown
There’s been plenty of freakish goals kicked in the AFL over the years but none of them is more bizarre and unlikely like the one kicked by Port Adelaide’s Angus Monfries in the final minutes of Showdown 35.
In what was the final Showdown to be played between the Crows and Power at Football Park, the two SA clubs sent out the West Lakes Stadium in style.
With less than two minutes left on the clock, Port Adelaide was eight points down.
Port managed to get on a fast break from the centre of the ground as Justin Westhoff rushed a kick to Angus Monfries amd Daniel Talia, one-on-one in the Power’s empty 50.
The ball bounces, Talia slips and Monfries gathers.
He boots it off his right in a truly ugly kick that proudces the most beautiful of fluke and famous moments for the Port Adelaide Football Club.
The kick would put the Power within two points.
Port would get the next goal with Chad Wingard kicking the sealer to give the Power a famous four-point victory.
