Not only was it the first time that the stadium had hosted Cricket, it was the first international match to played indoors thanks to the grounds retractable rood.
The Aussies put on a dominant performance weith Steve Waugh 114 not out and Micheal Bevan scoring 106, winning the first match of the best of three series by 94 runs.
1997 – Gabba Thriller Results in Draw
The AFL’s newest side Port Adelaide travelled to the Gabba to meet the newly merged Brisbane Lions at the Gabba in Round 20 of the 1997 AFL season.
Brisbane and Port Adelaide had played out a thriller earlier in Round 5 of that season with the Power getting over the line by two points at Football Park.
Port Adelaide dominated in the first half, but it was an eight-goal third team that allowed the Lions to claw back into the game with a frenetic final quarter resulting ina draw.
Justin Leppitsch kicked four for the Lions, with Daniel Bradshaw kicking 3 in just his 13th AFL game.
Scott Cummings booted four up forward for Port Adelaide.
The final score was Brisbane 13-15 (93) drew with Port Adelaide 13-15 (93) infron of 20,835 at the Gabba.
Splitting the two premiership points was able to allow it to be enough for Brisbane to play finals that season with only two percentage points from Port Adelaide who finished ninth.
