1985 – Shinboners Farewell Arden Street

The 529th and final VFL match played at Arden Street Oval on this day 35 years ago.

North Melbourne farewelled their spiritual and iconic home ground in style as a small crowd of 7,341 were on hand to witness the Kangaroos have a comfortable win over Richmond by 50 points.

Arden Street was a fortress for the Kangaroos, but it true North Melbourne style no means fancy as the ground overlooked a gasometer.

Arguably, the most famous moment happened on the ground at half-time during a Roos v Collingwood clash back in 1978.

The ground was packed and was offering elephant rides to anyone that was keen to take part.

The final match would be North Melbourne’s only game at Arden Stree for the 1985 season, with most games moved to the MCG.

While it was a sad day for the North faithful, it was clear that Channel 7 commentator Peter Landy was happy to see the end of it.

1976 – Whispering Death Destroys England

Michael Holding became the only West Indies player to take 14 wickets in a Test match in one of the most extraordinary displays of fast bowling ever staged.

The pitch at the Oval had a reputation for being a graveyard for pace bowlers, but Holding twice-Clean bowled England’s captain Tony Greig.

Holding, who was given the nickname “Whispering Death” lived up to the name taking 8/92 and 6/57 to wrap up the Windies 3-0 series win.
