2000 – Freddy vs Joey
This date is one that the likes of Andrew Johns and any Newcastle Knights supporter would want to forget, but if you follow the Roosters – read on!
It’s 20 years to the day when the Knights self-destructed, giving up a 16-2 half-time lead to the Sydney Roosters only to lose 26-20 in the 2000 NRL Preliminary Final.
Going back into the sheds at half-time, Darren Albert blew a kiss at a televison camera and Andrew “Joey” Johns appeared to wish injured Roosters lock Luke Ricketson to enjoy his Mad Monday.
Karma came back to bite the Knights.
A five minute meltdown from Newcastle, resulted in a Brad “Freddy” Fitler frenzy who scored despite a bruised ankle as the Roosters raced in three quick tries to find themselves up 20-16.
The Roosters went on to increase their lead to 26-16 in the 66th minute of the game via a Try from Shannon Hegarty after a cut pass from Filter.
The boys from Bondi scoring 24 unanswered points!
With 10 minutes left in the game, Matty Johns, Danny Buderus and Joey fired off passes resulting in Timana Tahu scoring a Try, the game going down to the wire Knights 20 – Roosters 26.
Two minutes left, Johns was in the backfield with six defenders chasing him trying to get his team into a Grand Final, but a tackle resulted in the ball getting loose.
An epic comeback had taken place and the Roosters would meet Wayne Bennett’s Broncos in the Grand Final.
1995 – Gone In 89 Seconds
After four years away (three of those in prison) “Iron” Mike Tyson returned to professional boxing and took on Peter “Hurricane” McNeeley at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
There was much hype leading up to the Tyson return bout, but the fight itself didn’t really live up to the expectations.
The fight lasted for only 89 seconds and Tyson won easily due to disqualification from the judges.
“Hurricane” McNeely came out agressivley full-out attacking Tyson at the opening bell.
Tyson avoided McNeely’s punches and his straight-right dropped him to the canvas and the “Hurricane” was out for the count.
McNeely got back up and was allowed to continue as the two exchanged punches before the bell rang for the first round.
20 seconds later, Tyson’s right uppercut send McNeely down.
McNeely was hurt and his manager Vinnie Vecchione entered the ring to call it off.
Iron Mike won by disqualification.
