2016 – Another Cowboys-Broncos Classic

Johnathan Thurston yet again broke Brisbane Broncos hearts, orchestrating yet another amazing win for the Cowboys in another Queensland Derby going into extra-time in Townsville.

The Cowboys were 14-6 down at half-time and 20-18 with a minute remaining taking the heartstopping match to extra time thanks to a last ditch penalty goal from the one and only Johnathan Thurston.

Thurston helped get the winning try for half-back partner Michael Morgan late in the first period of extra time putting an end to the Broncos 2016 season.

North Queensland had famously beaten the Brisbane Broncos in the previous years Grand Final thanks to a Thurston drop goal in golden point, and history had almost repeated itself in the semi-final of 2016.

The Cowboys six point win was a thriller but was actually the biggest winning margin of the past five Queensland derby clashes, in where the previous three had been decided by one point.

At the end of the match, Broncos skipper Corey Parker said farewell to the 23,800 full-house as his stellar career came to an end.

The Cowboys would face Cronulla in Sydney in the following weeks Preliminary Final.

2000 – Smash ‘Em Like Gutairs

Today is the 20 year anniversary of one of Australia’s most famous Olympic Gold Medals.

It was the night the Australian Mens 4×100 meter freestyle relay team smashed Gary Hall Jnr and his American team like gutairs.

Leading up to the event, the outspoken American Swimmer Gary Hall Jnr infamously proclaimed “My biased opinion says that we will smash them (Australia’s 4x100m team) like guitars.”

It was on between Thorpe and Hall in the final leg of the relay, when Hall Jnr. Passed Thorpe at the 350 meters mark but the Thropedo was able to recover and touched the wall first to deliver gold for the Australians.

Led by Michael Klim, the Australians responded by playing air guitar to celebrate.

To be fair to Gary Hall Jnr, he was a true sportsman and was the first to congratulate the triumphant Aussie team.
