2009 – Cats By a Toe-Poke
Geelong sealed their second premiership in three years after defeating St Kilda by 12 points in one of the great AFL Grand Finals.
Both the Saints and Cats slugged it out for three quarters in what was a full-on and brutal contest.
In what was one of the most legendary passages of play in a Grand Final, Cat Matthew Scarlett’s toe-poke to Gary Ablett Jnr who set the goal up for Paul Chapman to break the deadlock late in the last quarter is now part of Football folklore.
The Cats trailed for the majority of the match, and their experience along with the hurt from the shock loss in 2008 gave them the edge.
Despite some early hamstring issues, Paul Chapman starred kicking three goals – including that vital one in the last quarter, racked up 26 touches went on to win the Norm Smith Medal.
Brownlow Medalist Gary Ablett Jnr was also superb with 25 disposals and Harry Taylor kept Saint Nick Riewoldt at bay keeping him to 1.1 and only five marks.
Final Score – Geelong 12-8 (80) def. St.Kilda 9-14 (68)
1993 – Back to Back Broncos
2020 has been a rough old year for the Brisbane Broncos but on this day 26 years ago they went back-to-back defeating St George 14-6 in the 1993 Winfield Cup Grand Final.
This was a significant achievement as they became the first team that finsihed 5th during the home and away season to go on and win the Grand Final.
Along with that, it was the fifth consecutive Grand Final Glenn Lazarus played in having played in the previous years decider for Brisbane and three years before that for the Raiders.
However, some would argue what the 1993 NSWRL Winfield Cup Grand Final was most remembered for was Tina Turner’s epic rendition of the Rugby League anthem “Simply the Best” before the game.
