2003 – Iron Hayden
In the first Test against Zimbabwe in Perth, Australia’s Matthew Hayden bludgeoned his way to 380 runs, breaking Brian Lara’s record for the highest individual score in Test Cricket.
Hayden managed to score a whopping 38 fours and 11 sixes with 10 hours at the crease tiring the Zimbabwe bowling attack.
Adam Gillchrist also played an excellent support act to Hayden, with an 84-ball century but this was very much Matthew Hayden’s moment.
1964 – Olympics Begin in Tokyo
The first Olympic games to be held in Asia opened in Tokyo on this day back in 1964.
Japan used the games as way to show off their successful post World War II resconstruction.
The torchbearer/lighter of the caldron was Yoshinori Sakai who was born in Horishima on the same day that the city was destroyed by an atomic bomb in 1945.
The Tokyo games were not only the first time the games had been held in Asia, but was also the first time South Africa was excluded due to the apartheid system.
It was also the first Olympic games that allowed technology to broadcast events live around the world rather than by tape delay.
