1987 – The Battle of Britain

An exhibition match between Carlton and North Melbourne that was meant to be a promotional tool to promote Australian Rules Football in London turned into one of the most infamous games in VFL/History.

Carlton had just won the 1987 premiership and couldn’t care less while North Melbourne was belted in the first week of the finals and opted to take it seriously.

The game went from meaningless to a bloodbath when a young Alistair Clarkson playing for the Kangaroos broke Carlton’s Ian Aitken’s jaw all hell broke loose.

The umpires were kept busy and started booking players throughout the game to face an unexpected date with the tribunal upon return to Australia.

Clarkson recived a four week suspension while North’s Donald McDonald was reported for striking Carlton’s David Rhys-Jones and copped a week.

For Carlton Jim Buckley, Wayne Johnson, Brad Shine, Mark Edwards and Rhys-Jones were all reproted.

Shine recieved a reprimand after an attempt to strike Clarkson with Buckly and Johnson receiving two week bans for actually hitting the now legendary Hawthorn coach.

Edwards copped two weeks for striking North’s John Law and Rhys-Jones also got a week off for his brewhaha with Donald McDonald.

In case you were wondering, North Melbourne won the game by 13 points.

1956 – Slow and Steady

Pakistan and Australia blocked their way through the slowest day in Test Cricket history in Karachi.

Between them, they mustered only 95 runs in what was described as a yawn-inducing final days play, for the loss of 12 wickets.

In what was the first match between the two countries, Fazal Mahmood had match figures of 13 for 114 as Pakistan went to win by 9 wickets with Australia dismissed for 187 in their second innings.
