1987 – A Viv Richards Masterclass

Viv Richards (now Sir Viv) demolished the Sri Lankan attack in a World Cup match in Karachi.

Richards scored 181 runs from only 125 balls, with his last 81 runs coming off 27 deliveries.

The West Indies made 4/360 – which was the highest ever ODI total at the time, with Sri Lanka not even bothering to chase them, instead settling for a 191 run defeat with only four wickets down.

It was Ashantha de Mel who got Richards in the end, but that was after his 1 for 97, in what was the most expensive ten-over spell in the history of ODI Cricket.

1964 – Golden Dawn

Australian golden girl Dawn Fraser won her third consecutive Olympic 100m freestyle gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics on this day back in 1964.

It was a phenomenal achievement, as Fraser who was age 27 at the time was considered a “Granny” by her teammates and commanded respect from her opponents as she made it three medals from three games.

Fraser cruised through in the heats to make the final before setting the benchmark of 59.9 seconds in the semi-final.

The 100 meters final lived up to all expectations, Fraser held the led at the turn but the American – 15-year-old Sharon Strouder came back to catch up with Dawn after 70 meters.

In a sprint to the finish line, Fraser had the reserve and will-power to get the job done, coming home in 59.5 seconds with Strouder only 0.4 seconds behind.

Fraser would become the first athelete – man or woman to win the same event as successive Olympic games.
