2004 – Plastered Wins Victoria Derby

WA raider Plastered spoiled Savabeel’s dream with an outstanding staying performance winning the Victoria Derby at Flemington on this day in 2004.

In the lead up to the race, rival trainer Graeme Rogerson tried to buy Plastered during the week, believing that the Perth gelding posed a major threat to Savabeel who had won the Cox Plate the week prior.

The race lived up to all expectations with both Plastered and Savabeel set out as joint $3.30 favourites, and when Savabeel took to the lead at the 300m he looked like he was going to run away with the Derby.

Plastered knucked down, with hard riding from Jockey Paul Harvey and wore away from Savabell who was gallant in defeat as he went down by 1-1/4 lengths, and found enoguh to edge Count Ricardo out of second by a nose in a thrilling finish.

1974 – Rumble In The Jungle

Muhammad Ali age 32 regained the world heavyweight title by knocking out George Foreman in the eight-round of the iconic fight know as the “Rumble in the Jungle” at Kinshasa in the Congo Democratic Republic on this day in 1974.

The bout was noted for featuring Ali’s famous ‘rope a dope’ tactic which he covered up cleverly allowing Foreman to punch himself out before lauching fists of fury at his tired opponent.
