2003 – Wilkinson Breaks Aussie Hearts

England would beat Australia in the Rugby World Cup final thanks to a Johnny Wilkinson drop goal with just 26 seconds remaining in the match.

Wilkinson’s last-gasp effort was all that seperated the two sides after 100 mintues and the dramatic extra-time.

The Wallabies battled hard and were never out of the game, ultimatley falling short at the end despite Lote Tuqiri opening the scoring.

The game looked to be headed for sudden death after Wilkinson and Elton Flatley swapped penalites in extra-time, but it would be Wilkinson’s drop goal that saw England win the final.

1999 – Langer & Gilly Save The Day

A stand of 238 between Justin Langer and Adam Gilchrist – in just his second test, helped carry Australia to a memorable victory over Pakistan in the final day of the second Test in Hobart on this day in 1999.

The Aussies made 6/369 in their second innings, the third highest winning Test total at the time.

Gillchrist would be undefeated on 149 after Langer was dismissed for 127, trying to hit a six to win the game at the end of the match after a seven-hour marathon that earned him man-of-the-match.

Langer and Gillchrists partnership was an Australian record for the sixth wicket against Pakistan and gave the Aussies a 2-0 lead in the three match series.

After the game, Australian skipper Steve Waugh regarded it as one of his best wins “I can’t remember too many wins like this. Normally we win well when we’re in front. This is the sort of win we’ve been looking for for a long time. To come from behind, do the hard work on the last day and chase like this was a tremendous team effort. This was as good a Test win as I’ve played in.”
