European Football Preview – May 8

With multiple leagues entering their final weeks, finding the best value bets becomes even more important.

Just three matches remain in Germany with the top four and relegation battles very much alive, so we are taking a triple play from the Bundesliga.

In Spain the top four is decided with the exact order still very much up in their air with two matches remaining and that is where our other two plays will come from.

Read on and see who we are backing in our European Football Preview this weekend.

Borussia Dortmund Vs RB Leipzig

Saturday 8 May, 11:30pm, Signal Iduna Park

This is the first of two meetings between Dortmund and Leipzig in less than a week with these two teams set to face off in the DFB Pokal Final next Friday morning.

While both sides would love to claim silverware in that contest, this fixture is almost certainly more important for Dortmund than the rematch.

Still on the wrong end of the top four, they cannot afford to drop any more remaining points to give themselves the best opportunity overtake Wolfsburg and/or Frankfurt in the next three weeks.

With that in mind, there is only one angle to take here and that is backing the hosts to extend their winning streak to five.

Werder Bremen Vs Bayer Leverkusen

Saturday 8 May, 11:30pm, Weserstadion

Bremen continues to do whatever the opposite of inspire is, losing seven league matches in a row and they are careening to the second division, sitting out of the relegation zone only on goal difference.

The good news for punters is that the market still has Leverkusen at a fairly generous price considering the mismatch between these clubs.

It is probably the most straightforward choice across Europe this weekend, Leverkusen to win this one comfortably.

Barcelona Vs Atletico Madrid

Sunday 9 May, 12:15am, Camp Nou

It is impossible to oversell the importance of this match as it could be the one that decides the La Liga title.

Atletico has stumbled towards the finish line but still has full control of their destiny in first place.

A victory for Diego Simeone’s side would give them a five point buffer over Barca while maintaining at least a two point gap on Real Madrid.

I just can’t bring myself to back against Barcelona in this fixture, something has clicked for Lionel Messi and company and even in front of an empty Camp Nou, I’ll back them to keep the race alive.

FC Koln Vs Freiburg

Sunday 9 May, 9:30pm, RheinEnergieStadion

Arguably the most important match of Koln’s season, they have a prime opportunity to pull themselves out of the relegation zone here.

Should they better the result of Bremen they will overtake them and could also leapfrog at least one of Bielefeld and Hertha Berlin who play each other with a victory over Freiburg.

The visitors in this match are firmly in ‘dead rubber’ territory consigned to a mid-table finish and may not be able to match up with a motivated Koln side, who have won their last two fixtures.

Desperation is crucial at this stage of the season and I’ll back the side this one means more to.

Valencia Vs Valladolid

Monday 10 May, 12:15am, Estadio de Mestalla

Mathematically Valencia could still be relegated, realistically they are just about safe in spite of a six match winless run that has yielded just three points.

Valladolid is one point above the drop zone and appears determined to inch its way to safety in the most painful manner possible.

They have drawn their last four, which is equal to or better than the points collected by each of the three sides below them in that time.

With a pair of draw specialists facing off, that’s where my money will be headed.
