European Football Preview – May 22

It is the final weekend for Europe’s major leagues with plenty to play for across the continent.

The Spanish title race will come down to the two Madrid powerhouses playing simultaneously in the early hours of Sunday morning while a pair of La Liga relegation spots are still to be determined.

In Italy the Scudetto is going to Inter Milan however Juventus needs to win and get some help in order to avoid playing Europa League football next year.

Finally, the Ligue 1 title in France will also go right down to the wire with three teams still in contention for the title and any one of six teams could be forced into a relegation playoff.

Read on and see our final previews and best bets from European football below.

Real Madrid Vs Villareal

Sunday 23 May, 2:00am, Alfredo di Stefano Stadium

When push comes to shove, Real Madrid’s 2-2 draw with Sevilla a fortnight ago will probably be what ultimately cost them the La Liga title.

The only thing that will give them any hope going into this match is the fact that if Atletico does slip, Real has the tiebreaker over them having won and drawn the two meetings this season.

Even with Villareal still playing off for a Europa League spot (and having the Europa League Final against Manchester United still to come), I just can’t see Real losing this.

In what could be Zinedine Zidane’s final match in charge I will back his players to send him out on a high note.

Combining that with Both Teams to Score (something that has hit in the last six head to head matches) gives us a good value SGM.

SGM: Real Madrid to Win & Both Teams to Score @ $2.74

Valladolid Vs Atletico Madrid

Sunday 23 May, 2:00am, Estadio Jose Zorrilla

Atletico is just doing enough to crawl over the line, overcoming a late stumble to take 10 points from their last four matches and have the title in their grasp.

It won’t come easily however with Valladolid needing to win and get some help with Huesca and Elche both losing to avoid relegation.

That is somewhat unlikely however as the first part alone would require a massive turnaround from the home side.

Valladolid has lost its last three matches by two or more goals and last recorded a win on March 6.

Atletico knows they don’t need to win the match by a dozen goals, even a 1-0 result will do, I’ll back them to get up early and close the door on the title race with a strong defensive effort.

Back Atletico Madrid to Win & Under 3.5 Goals @ $2.15

Atalanta Vs AC Milan

Monday 24 May, 4:45am, Gewiss Stadium

Atalanta cannot finish worse than fourth in the Serie A standings however they can not only lock up second spot with a win here, but put a dagger in AC Milan’s Champions League hopes.

They come into this game in red hot form, unbeaten in their last 11 Serie A matches.

What does concern me a little bit about backing them outright is the turnaround from a gut wrenching defeat in the Copa Italia final against Juventus last week.

AC struggled in their last outing, falling to a 0-0 draw against lowly Cagliari and will surely be out for revenge.

I will still take Atalanta as a home underdog considering they last lost a domestic match at the Gewiss Stadium on February 1.

Back Atalanta to Win & Over 2.5 Goals @ $3.25

Bologna Vs Juventus

Monday 24 May, 4:45am, Stadio Renato Dall’Ara

At the same time as Atalanta and AC Milan facing off, Juventus takes on Bologna needing some big time help to leapfrog into the top four.

They will need one or both of AC Milan and Napoli to drop points and win their match to avoid playing in the Europa League.

It leaves them with one option here, attack.

Expect them to come out firing, buoyed by their Cup triumph during the week and now they have the added confidence of knowing they have won their last 10 against Bologna, keeping clean sheets in seven of those matches.

Angers Vs Lille

Monday 24 May, 5:00am, Stade Raymond-Kopa

This is the only match that directly alters the Ligue 1 title race, if Lille can defeat 12th placed Angers they will be crowned champions of France.

Angers has nothing tangible to gain or lose from this match other than a few places on the final table.

They do not bring an overly encouraging form line into this match losing six of their last seven matches, they have rediscovered their scoring touch, finding the back of the net five times in their last two outings.

Lille could have already had the title secured had they won last weekend against St Etienne and know what is up for grabs here.

I’ll back them to take care of business this time and end the title dreams of their rivals by picking up all three points.

Back Lille to Win -1 Goal @ $2.05
