Australia’s Cricket World Cup Wins

Australia’s Cricket World Cup Wins

The Australian Cricket team broke through for their maiden T20 World Cup on Monday morning, beating New Zealand in the final in Dubai.

Mitchell Marsh was the surprising hero for the Aussies, steering his country to victory with 77* from just 50 balls.

The Australians have come under scrutiny in the shorter form of the game since the T20 World Cup commenced in 2007, playing in just one other final in 2010.

One Day Cricket World Cups have been a totally different story, a tournament we have dominated since its inception.

We’ve gone through all of Australia’s Cricket World Cup Wins below.

2021 T20 World Cup

Player of the Series: David Warner

Player of the Match (Final): Mitchell Marsh

Despite a valiant effort from New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson (85 off 48) the Aussies dominated the T20 Final on their way to securing their first T20 World Cup.

2015 ODI World Cup

Player of the Series: Mitchell Starc

Player of the Match (Final): James Faulkner

The host nations played out the final of the Cricket World Cup in 2015 with Australia again dominating the kiwis from starter to finish.

New Zealand was dealt a huge blow when they lost Brendon McCullum for a duck early in the final at the MCG, setting Australia just 186 for victory.

Mitchell Starc took 22 wickets for the tournament.

2007 ODI Cricket World Cup

Player of the Series: Glenn McGrath

Player of the Match (Final): Adam Gilchrist

The Aussies were short priced favourites going into the 2007 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies with a team stacked full of champions including Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, Michael Clarke, Michael Hussey and Glenn McGrath.

They were undefeated throughout the whole tournament, winning the final easily against Sri Lanka by 53 runs (via the D/L method) in the dark thanks to an incredible knock at the top of the order by Adam Gilchrist 149 (104).

Glenn McGrath dominated with the ball, taking 26 wickets in the tournament.

2003 ODI Cricket World Cup

Player of the Series: Sachin Tendulkar

Player of the Match (Final): Ricky Ponting

Australia’s record in World Cup finals continued when they posted a mammoth 360 total thanks to the heroics of Ricky Ponting who hit 140 runs from just 121 balls.

That is the highest score by an individual in a World Cup Final.

It was too much for India who could manage only 234 in response.

Sachin Tendulkar was excellent throughout the tournament, hitting 673 runs but just four of them came in the final.

The Aussies won the tournament without a banned Shane Warne and an injured Jason Gillespie.

1999 ODI Cricket World Cup

Player of the Series: Lance Klusener

Player of the Match (Final): Shane Warne

England did not make it through the Group stage of the 1999 World Cup despite the tournament taking place in their own back yard and to make things worst, their biggest rivals took it out!

The image of Shane Warne dancing on the balcony at Lord’s after their demolition of Pakistan in the final will surely haunt the Poms forever.

Warne was at his very best throughout the entire torunament, saving his best for the semi-final (4-29) and final (4-33) both of which he was judged Player of the Match.

The win wasn’t without some luck and controversy after Australia won their way through to the final when they drew with South Africa in the semi, progressing because they finished higher than S.A in the group stage.

It was one of the biggest chokes in the history of sport.

1987 ODI Cricket World Cup

Player of the Series: None

Player of the Match (Final): David Boon 75 (125)

Australia’s first World Cup triumph came in Pakistan and India; with Australia beat England in the final by seven runs.

A Player of the Series was not awarded for the tournament but Graham Gooch hit 471 runs and Craig McDermott took 18 wickets.
