Is there anything that Ange Postecoglou cannot do?
He has conquered Australia, conquered Asia, conquered Japan and now he’s conquered Scotland with Celtic securing successive league titles and at the time of publish, being on the verge of a historic treble.
As anyone who has followed the rise of Postecoglou since he took over the Brisbane Roar in 2009 knows, the man is ambitious and won’t settle for what he has accomplished already.
Which begs the question, when he decides to move on from Celtic, where to next?
Naturally the Premier League beckons for the Aussie boss with a number of vacancies that could tempt him to jump ship.
We’ve broken down some of Postecoglou’s options, whether he leaves in a couple of weeks, a couple of years or later on down the line, it will be tough to back against him succeeding.
Leicester
We’ve been hearing it all season, Leicester are too good to go down and if they survive, Postecoglou is one of, if not the best candidate to take over at the King Power Stadium.
It’s a side that needs a bit of a reset but the talent is there in each area of the pitch and there’s only a few tweaks that should be needed to get them back to their best.
Leeds
The footballing gods can be incredibly cruel sometimes and Leeds going from Marcelo Bielsa to Sam Allardyce in less than two seasons is about the same as going from a Lamborghini Huracan to a 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser.
Sure the Land Cruiser will get you from point a to point b, but it lacks the excitement and nerves over whether or not the Lambo will actually take off in a straight line.
Postecoglou would present a return to the Bielsa-ball style that got Leeds promoted, however before they think about bringing anyone new in, they had better survive.
Liverpool
Before you dismiss this one out of hand, we’re not calling for Jurgen Klopp to get the sack but he has spoken about needing a sabbatical at some stage and may opt out of his contract sooner rather than later.
By all reports (or at least a few random people on the Twitter machine), Postecoglou is a Liverpool fan and he could take this side and mount a title challenge almost instantly.
Hell he might even make Liverpool likeable for non-Liverpool fans.
Chelsea
Let’s make a list of the pros and cons of Postecoglou heading to Stamford Bridge.
Pros: An almost unlimited budget, freedom to clear out the current squad, some decent players to work with on day one, any improvement will be welcome, a broom in a dress shirt and tie will be better than Frank Lampard, if he gets sacked, the payout will have him set for life.
Cons: If he doesn’t win his first couple of games he will get sacked, the egos in the dressing room, the team needs a massive overhaul, it’s Chelsea.
Tottenham
Now if Ange wants the biggest challenge imaginable, send him to Tottenham to try and win a trophy for the club that has been seemingly allergic to silverware for a very long time.
It will be even more impressive when he sells Harry Kane for some ridiculous sum, has fans falling for his head and unearths the next Besart Berisha.
Ok maybe not, Ange is good but even he has his limits.
Blackburn
Postecoglou has the resume to walk into a current Premier League club, but he could give himself a real challenge to try and get Blackburn promoted back into the Premier League.
The Rovers have gone close to promotion many times in the last few years but have been made to wait yet again.
Plus imagine seeing that open, expansive style of football on a dreary November afternoon at Ewood Park when it gets dark at 3:00pm.
He probably won’t be asking former Blackburn player Robbie Slater for tips on the club though.
PSG
You could actually recycle most of the points for Chelsea when discussing PSG, a club that has no qualms rolling through managers.
Admittedly Postecoglou might not be the drawcard some on Paris would be looking for, but with Messi and Neymar (at least) on the way out, they could do worse.
OGC Nice
No other reason than we just want to see the headline: “Postecoglou’s Nice playing very nice football”
Schalke
This one is a bit of a roll of the dice, but there could be a real incentive to rebuilding this fallen German giant.
The one time Champions League mainstays have fallen apart in the last few years and spent the 2021/2022 season in the second division.
At the time of publish they are only just on the right side of the drop zone but Ange heading to the highly technical Bundesliga would be a sight to see.
Plus they wouldn’t have to rely on stuff like this to make headlines.
Borussia Dortmund
Taking in a Dortmund game is a must for any football fan to have on their bucket list.
Presumably managing in front of the Yellow Wall is something many managers will aspire to as well.
Not to mention the motivation to knock Bayern off their perch would be a strong pull for heading to the German powerhouse side as well.
Wrexham
Whatever your feelings on the little club in Wales that has become a Hollywood outpost, them going and signing Aussie Ange and paying him something ridiculous would just be on par for that place.
Not that they have a reason to move on Phil Parkinson after he got them promoted into League Two for the 2023/2024 season.
But it would be interesting to hear Ryan Reynolds one-liners directed at the Aussie boss, and what Ange would say back.
Probably something involving his famous “I’m not a…” catch phrase from his press conferences.
Australia
Actually never mind, Graham Arnold got the Socceroos to the Round of 16 at the World Cup and should stick around for the time being.
Plus you get the feeling Ange isn’t suited to the 12-14 games per year the national team plays.
We’ll always have the 2015 Asian Cup Final though.
South Melbourne
There are so many jokes you could make about South Melbourne actually trying to bring Postecoglou back to Lakeside, but we’ll play this one with a pretty straight bat.
Before his time in the A-League and before his eventful (and one unsuccessful) spell with the junior national teams, Postecoglou was in charge of South Melbourne in the old NSL.
After taking over in 1996, he lead South to consecutive titles in his second and third seasons in charge.
And with the new National Second Division on the cards back at home, surely South will try and put in a call to their favourite son.
He’ll say no, but they can always ask.
Carlton
Postecoglou’s sporting love is not just limited to the round ball game, with Carlton in the AFL also acquiring some of his attention.
It would be an interesting experiment to see how his style of play would translate into the 18-a-side code but seeing him at work would be worth the price of admission early on.
While he was happy with the Socceroos at the time, you wonder if Ange found his name on any sort of shortlist back in 2015.
Melbourne Storm
Given Ange’s previous comments on the two dominant codes here in Australia, his willingness to take a job in either one is pretty slim.
Especially with the money and ability to go anywhere in the world football can offer him too.
But with one supercoach reportedly headed for the exit door back in his hometown, send him to the Storm and see what he can do with that team.
Rangers
Now THIS would be the ultimate heel-turn, even worse than Nate Shelly going to West Ham at the end of Season 2 in Ted Lasso.
Postecoglou has been engaged in a bit of a slinging match with current Rangers boss Michael Beale who suggested the Aussie is “lucky”.
What better way to shut him up than to cross the Glasgow divide, turn Rangers into the dominant force and show just how much luck has to do with his career.
