In my opinion, the Challenge Stakes is a perfect race for Mazu.
Mazu hasn’t won a race for nearly a year, but I thought that he was far from disgraced in Group 1 company down in Melbourne when resuming and is subsequently open to good improvement.
He boasts an excellent record here at Randwick and he is a horse that only improves the heavier a track gets. The more rain, the better for him today!
I’m very keen on Tom Kitten in this afternoon’s All-Star Mile.
A Group 1 winner, Tom Kitten turned in plenty of typically smart performances last time in, but his fresh effort to only just miss behind Mr Brightside in the Futurity Stakes a fortnight ago suggested he might have improved again.
He’s a second up winner previously, there’s no doubt he’ll relish the mile, and he should get every chance on the big Flemington track.
I’m backing the class of Ceolwulf at nice odds today in Canterbury Stakes betting ($9 at publish).
Dropping back to the 1300m here is interesting, but he’s a horse that tends to enjoy sharp second up improvement and clearly, he is just one of the classiest horses engaged in the race.
With even luck in running, he’ll be as hard to hold out as ever.
Though there is a case to be built for most of these gallopers, I’m going to give Growing Empire another chance in the Newmarket Handicap.
He was beaten as a popular pick in betting when resuming in the Lightning Stakes here, but we know how good this horse can be, and he was unlucky not to strike in Group 1 company last time in.
He’s a horse that tends to enjoy sharp improvement with a run under his belt and the booking of a senior hoop like Mark Zahra certainly doesn’t hinder his chances.
