Whanganui Preview – Saturday 15 March

Saturday racing heads to Wanganui for a competitive eight-race card.

The forecast for the region is clear on Friday and Saturday, which will likely sees the track playing nice and fast, an ideal state for a good day of racing come Saturday.

Track: Good4 (likely Good3/Good4 on Saturday)

Rail: True position

Tips for all of the eight races out of Wanganui below:

Wanganui Insurance Brokers 2YO (1200m) - Race 1 10:45am AEDT

War Princess (6) won well on debut, where she showed good early speed to find the front and kicked away from a comfortable victory.

Although she’s drawn the outside gate again here, I thought she had enough early speed to find a forward position and take some beating again at start No.2.

1 Unit – War Princess (6)

Wanganui Greyhound Racing Club Mdn (1340m) - Race 2 11:18am AEDT

Cut Loose (1) ran well last start when sitting outside the leader and fighting right to the line over 1360m.

The blinkers have now been applied for this and I expect he can lead this field from the handy gate. Expect to see him take plenty of running down in this.

2 Units – Cut Loose (1)

Wanganui-Taranaki Racehorse Assoc. Owners Hcp (1340m) - Race 3 11:51am AEDT

Mr Mojo Risin’ (4) was only a pass mark at best first-up, where he didn’t find the line all that well after being involved in the early burn.

I expect he will be improved for that first-up effort and now gets in light after the 3kg claim.

He maps to land the trail from the low draw, which should see him get every chance to be winning this.

2 Units – Mr Mojo Risin’ (4)

Wanganui Steelformers 3YO (1600m) - Race 4 12:24pm AEDT

Coulthard (1) cleared out for a big maiden win at Waverley last start.

He maps to get a similar run here midifield with cover off a genuine tempo.

If he runs up to his last start win, he would be hard to beat in this for mine.

2 Units – Coulthard (1)

Mr Swabby 25 Years BM75 (1600m) - Race 5 1:00pm AEDT

Privy Garden (6) won nicely at Waverley last start, despite wanting to knock off and do a few things wrong late in the piece.

She maps to land handy to the speed in a race that doesn’t look to have an abundance of tempo, which should see her given every chance to win again.

She’s been strongly backed in early markets and she should take some beating in this.

3 Units – Privy Garden (6)

Carpet Maintenance & Cleaning Hcp (2040m) - Race 6 1:35pm AEDT

Phats (6) just battled home last start at Trentahm over a mile.

He was going into that race fresh and now looks well placed stepping out over 2040m off a two-week gap between runs.

This is only a moderate field and if he could produce something close to his best here, he would be very hard to beat.

1 Unit – Phats (6)

Wanganui Motors BM65 (2040m) - Race 7 2:10pm AEDT

Sunset Boulevard (2) had the audacity to be only beaten a short margin into 4th last start after being caught wide without cover throughout over 2100m.

While she has drawn wide again, the 2040m start point at Whanganui has a much longer run into the first bend than the Trentham 2100m, which should aid her in obtaining cover.

Hard to see how she doesn’t figure in the finish if she runs up to that last start performance.

2 Units – Sunset Boulevard (2)

Jolt Coffee House BM65 (1340m) - Race 8 2:45pm AEDT

Great Escape (9) was 440 days between runs heading into her first-up assignment and she came home well down the outer despite being caught wide throughout.

She maps to get a soft run on the fence throughout from the low draw, which should see her given every chance to finish her race off strongly.

Very good each way play to cap off the day.
