Riverton Preview – Saturday 19th April

Riverton plays host to a 10-race card on Saturday, with the Riverton Cup the feature of the day. The track is rated a Heavy8 at publish, but with no rain forecast, we could see an upgrade by the start of proceedings at Riverton.

Track: Heavy8 (likely Soft6/Soft7 come raceday)

Rail: True

Selections for each of the 10 races out of Riverton below:

Kevin Burns Memorial Mdn - Race 1 9:40am

Has mixed her form to date but brings a couple of strong efforts and now returns to her home track. Expecting her to roll forward and take up a position near the speed. Amber Riddell claims 3kg and if she can find her rhythm up front, she’s capable of giving a sight in this.

1 Unit Flash Roca (12)

Todd & Co Realty / Ruahine Dairies (Bm65) - Race 2 10:10am

Yet to put it together since joining the Robert Dennis team but has had genuine excuses. Blinkers go on and Billy Jacobson reunites. This race doesn’t look overly strong and the set-up suggests he’s capable of improving sharply in a race lacking depth.

1 Unit Magnastar (6)

Bupa Care Services Excellency Stakes 2Yo - Race 3 10:45am

Found the line nicely on debut and looked to have a few things go against him in the run. Draws to settle handier if he steps cleanly and should take natural improvement from that first outing. Looks well placed to figure in the finish.

1 Unit Four The Moment (3)

Ashford Motor Lodge Christchurch Pourakino (Bm65) - Race 4 11:20am

Comes back in grade and looks suited dropping in class. Likely to drift back early from the wide draw, which isn’t a negative given that is his usual racing pattern anyway. The 3kg claim helps and finds a winnable assignment here. Can win this.

1 Unit Tomyturbo (1)

Riverton Butchery Aparima Hcp - Race 5 11:55am

Failed to fire in good company last start. He’s been freshened since and gets a far more suitable set-up here. Can take up a handy spot behind a solid tempo and the booking of Tina Comignaghi is a positive. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him bounce back here.

1 Unit Willis (5)

Forde Auto Services / Speights Fairfax (Bm65) - Race 6 12:35pm

Impressive breaking maiden ranks last start and looks a horse that could go on with it in this company. Will likely get back from the draw but the race looks to have strong tempo on paper. Could give this a shake if he gets the right tow into the race late in the piece.

1 Unit No Party (4)

Riverton Rural Transport Francolin Stakes - Race 7 1:10pm

In a great vein of form lately and gets in with just 52kg under the set weights conditions after the claim. Maps to land in a sweet spot and can be produced for one run at them in the straight. Hard to fault what she’s been doing of late and she looks the one they have to beat.

2 Units Go Lotte (1)

Kennedy Building Riverton Cup - Race 8 1:45pm

Far from disgraced in the Gr.2 company behind Waitak last start and brings that class edge back to a more suitable assignment. Drops in grade and returns to his home track, with the claim helping at the weights. Looks well placed to feature and appeals as a strong each-way play.

1 Unit each way Prince Alby (1)

Aparima Restaurant And Bar (Bm75) - Race 9 2:20pm

Freshened for this and maps to find cover midfield from a low gate. Tina Comignaghi takes the ride and she looks suited in a race where she should get a good smother back in the field. Has a good turn of foot late on her day and should get every chance to finish over the top late.

1 Unit each way Sestina (2)

Ewan Allan Honda / Ab Lime Waipango (Bm65) - Race 10 2:55pm

Forget the formline — he’s been racing in mostly stronger company of late than what he meets here. Back in grade, gets the blinkers back on, and returns to the mile at his home track. Donovan Cooper takes 2kg off and the price looks appealing. Knockout hope at odds.

1 Unit Reprobate (6)
