Only Swiss qualifier Leandro Riedi stands between eighth seed Alex de Minaur and a third US Open quarter-final appearance.
World No.435 Riedi made his major debut at Wimbledon and has parlayed qualifying wins over Otto Virtanen and Garrett Johns into an unlikely Round of 16 run in New York.
The 23-year-old beat Pedro Martinez in straights sets in the first round, then came from two sets down to eliminate 19th seed Francisco Cerundolo. Kamil Majchrzak pulled out of their Round of 32 clash during the first set.
It’s been relatively smooth sailing for de Minaur, who disposed of Christopher O’Connell and Shintaro Mochizuki in straight sets before advancing past Daniel Altmaier 6-7 6-4 67-4 2-0 ret.
De Minaur was a quarter-finalist here in 2020 and ’24, and has reached the last eight in four of the past six majors. He’s a big step up in quality from anyone Riedi has faced – certainly in terms of hard-court players – and this shapes as a straightforward assignment for the Aussie livewire.
The busy rivalry between Felix Auger-Aliassime and Andrey Rublev resumes with a maiden grand slam showdown in the US Open’s Round of 16.
Rublev boasts a commanding 7-1 record against Auger-Aliassime, including wins in the Doha and Hamburg semi-finals already in 2025. Auger-Aliassime’s sole win was back at the 2022 Rotterdam Open, losing five straight to the Russian since.
Six of their eight clashes have featured at least one tiebreak.
Auger-Aliassime, the 25th seed, has built on some encouraging Cincinnati Masters performances with straight-sets wins over Billy Harris and Roman Safiullin, and a massive 4-6 7-6 6-4 6-4 upset of world No.3 Alexander Zverev over the past week.
The big-serving Canadian had not been past the second round of a major since the 2024 French Open, but he was a semi-finalist at the 2021 US Open.
Fifteenth seed Rublev has been to 10 grand slam quarter-finals (for zero wins) and found some of his best form to reach the last eight in Toronto and Cincinnati.
The 27-year-old has so far accounted for Dino Prizmic in straight sets, Tristan Boyer in four and Coleman Wong in a rollercoaster five-setter.
Whether the enigmatic Auger-Aliassime is capable of replicating the performance that brought down Zverev is debatable, but his elite serve looks locked in and suggests Rublev will have to settle in for a few hours of court time to progress to a fifth US Open quarter-final.
Resurgent two-time champ Naomi Osaka and 2023 winner Coco Gauff lock horns in a mouth-watering US Open Round of 16 showdown.
Gauff has a 3-2 edge in the rivalry, advancing from the last two encounters at the 2022 Silicon Valley Classic and last year’s Beijing Open (though Osaka retired at one set all in the latter). Osaka’s wins were at the 2019 US Open and 2021 Cincinnati Masters.
Osaka returned to the top 25 with a stirring run to the Canadian Masters final. The 2018 and ’20 US Open champ has maintained that momentum with victories over Greet Mineen (6-3 6-4), Hailey Baptiste (6-3 6-1) and 15th seed Daria Kasatkina (6-0 4-6 6-3).
World No.3 Gauff, who won her second slam earlier this year at the French Open, has put a first-round Wimbledon exit and a patchy hard-court build-up behind her in New York.
The crowd favourite survived a scare against Aussie veteran Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round (6-4 6-7 5-7) but has found subsequent opponents Donna Vekic (7-6 6-2) and 28th seed Magdalena Frech (6-3 6-1) easier to deal with.
In arguably the most anticipated match of the tournament so far, Osaka has rediscovered the fire and dynamism of her world No.1 reign and has the tools to rattle Gauff, who has struggled on serve but is a defensive player without peer.
Wimbledon runner-up Amanda Anisimova is piecing together another solid grand slam run at the US Open, where she meets a rejuvenated 18th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia.
Anisimova boasts a 2-1 advantage in the head-to-head after wins in Bogota in 2019 and Doha in 2022, but Haddad Maia won the most recent encounter at the 2023 Adelaide International.
Eighth seed Anisimova put away Australian duo Kim Birrell (6-3 6-2) and Maya Joint (7-6 6-2) comfortably, before outlasting Jacqueline Cristian 6-4 4-6 6-2.
Haddad Maia arrived in New York on a four-match losing streak – all against opponents she would expect to beat – but has regrouped with US Open wins over Sonay Kartal (6-3 1-6 6-1), Viktorija Golubic (6-1 6-4) and Maria Sakkari (6-1 6-2).
The Brazilian was a quarter-finalist here last year, while this is the first time Anisimova has been past the third round at her home major.
While there were some shaky periods against Cristian, Anisimova remains the better bet on the strength of her recent grand slam achievements and her top-tier ball-striking power.
