Wimbledon final foes Amanda Anisimova and Iga Swiatek lock horns again in the US Open quarter-finals – with American Anisimova aiming to avenge a harrowing 6-0 6-0 defeat in what was the pair’s only career meeting to date.
Eighth seed Anisimova has progressed to her first US Open quarter-final – and fourth at grand slam level overall – with wins over Kim Birrell (6-3 6-2), Maya Joint (7-6 6-2), Jacqueline Cristian (6-4 4-6 6-2) and 18th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia (6-0 6-3).
Backing up her Wimbledon triumph with the Cincinnati Masters title, world No.2 Swiatek dropped a set to Suzan Lamens in the second round but has been otherwise untroubled by Emiliana Arango, Anna Kalinskaya and 13th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, who she dismantled 6-3 6-1.
Swiatek won the US Open in 2022. She was tipped up in the quarters last year by Jessica Pegula but has a 9-3 record in grand slam quarter-finals.
A repeat blowout seems unlikely, but despite receiving the support of the crowd Anisimova has some huge mental hurdles to overcome after her Wimbledon final collapse. Swiatek is in devastating touch and remains the favourite to win the tournament.
Resurgent Naomi Osaka has rediscovered the magic at the US Open, powering into a quarter-final match-up with Karolina Muchova, who has grinded her way through four three-setters.
The head-to-head is square at two-all. Muchova prevailed 6-3 7-6 in the second round of last year’s US Open, but Osaka turned the tables in the Australian Open in January with a 1-6 6-1 6-3 comeback win.
Climbing back into the top 25 with some excellent recent form, Osaka has disposed of Greet Mineen (6-3 6-4), Hailey Baptiste (6-3 6-1), Daria Kasatkina (6-0 4-6 6-3) and – in a stunning Round of 16 rout – world No.3 Gauff (6-3 6-2).
Eleventh seed Muchova, the 2023 French Open runner-up, has outlasted Venus Williams, Sorana Cirstea and seeded players Linda Noskova and Marta Kostyuk.
The crafty, durable 29-year-old reached the semi-finals here in 2023 and ’24.
Osaka took out the title here in 2018 and ’20 – also winning the subsequent Australian Opens – and is playing her most consistent and formidable tennis in years. Expect another couple of chapters in this comeback narrative to unfold.
Aussie eighth seed Alex de Minaur gets his best chance at a grand slam semi-final appearance yet when he takes on 25th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime at the US Open.
The head-to-head stands at 3-2 in Auger-Aliassime’s favour. The Canadian won two matches in 2022, but de Minaur took out the only encounter since – a three-set win at the 2024 Rome Masters.
De Minaur dropped a first-set tiebreak to Daniel Altmaier in third round but has otherwise been clinical and dominant in putting away Christopher O’Connell. Shintaro Mochizuki and Leandro Riedi.
Auger-Aliassime represents easily ‘Demon’s’ most challenging opponent so far in terms of quality and ranking – and the big-serving 25-year-old has rediscovered some of his best in New York.
The 2021 US Open semi-finalist beat Billy Harris and Roman Saifiullin in straight sets, world No.3 Alexander Zverev in four sets and 15th seed Andrey Rublev 7-5 6-3 6-4.
De Minaur has been the last eight of a major five times previously, losing to Dominic Thiem, Zverev, Jack Draper and Jannik Sinner, and withdrawing injured on another occasion. Heading in as the favourite is a unique situation for the livewire.
De Minaur’s durability, court-coverage and elite defence will need to be at their peak to combat Auger-Aliassime’s serve and powerful forehand.
World No.1 and defending champion Jannik Sinner is sailing towards a fifth straight grand slam final at the US Open, where he encounters 10th seed and fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the quarter-finals.
Sinner took out their only two clashes to date in straight sets, at the 2021 Antwerp Open and the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters.
After dropping a first-set tiebreak to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round, Musetti has been totally dominant – beating the Frenchman in four sets, then crushing David Goffin, Flavio Cobolli and Jaume Munar for the loss of no more than six games.
Sinner has been similarly unstoppable, losing only the first set to Denis Shapovalov in the third round. He cruised past Vit Kopriva and Alexei Popyrin the first two rounds and demolished 23rd seed Alexander Bublik 6-1 6-1 6-1 in the Round of 16.
The 24-year-old is the sport’s best in virtually every facet at present with Carlos Alcaraz looking like the only player capable of challenging him once again. Another landslide win for Sinner looms.
