Guangzhou Challenger top seed Chistopher O’Connell takes on Christopher Eubanks in the second round.
The head-to-head is square at one-all, with O’Connell winning a Busan Challenger quarter-final in 2022 and Eubanks prevailing in the third round at Wimbledon in 2023. Four of their six sets played went to a tiebreak.
World No.89 O’Connell beat Te Rigele 6-4 6-4 in the first round, his first match since losing to compatriot Alex de Minaur in the first round of the US Open. The 31-year-old’s North American swing included a win over Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Toronto Masters.
A top-30 player two years ago, Eubanks currently sits at No.180. The American edged out Kasidit Samrey 7-5 7-6 in the first round, only his third win at any level from his last 12 matches.
Eubanks made the Wimbledon quarter-finals two years ago but has been nowhere that level of late. The limited but dogged O’Connell should progress comfortably.
Czech duo Darja Vidmanova and Nikola Bartunkova square off in the Guadalajara Open’s Round of 16.
World No.161 Vidamanova, the winner of seven ITF titles in the past 14 months, battled through two qualifiers to make the main draw here before upsetting seventh seed Alycia Parks 6-2 6-4 in the first round.
Nineteen-year-old wildcard Bartunkova, ranked 228th after returning from a WTA ban, banked just her second tour-level win in the first round against Nicole Fossa Huergo (6-4 6-2).
Bartunkova was the 2023 Wimbledon Junior runner-up and took out a W75 title in Germany in July, but the more experienced Vidamanova is the safer pick in this one.
Rising Colombian Victoria Jimenez Kastintseva and second seed Veronika Kudermetova square off at the Guadalajara Open.
Former Australian Open Junior champ Kastintseva is ranked 123rd, following up a WTA 125k semi-final run in Warsaw with a tight two-set loss to Maya Joint on grand slam debut at the US Open.
The 20-year-old then knocked top seed Kamilla Rakhimova out in the first round of the Abierto Zapopan last week and won two qualifiers here before defeating Elena Pridankina 6-4 6-3 in the first round.
World No.26 Kudermetova plays her first match since being upset by Janice Tjen in the first round of the US Open – a bitterly disappointing result after reaching the Cincinnati Masters semis with wins over Belinda Bencic and Clara Tauson.
Jiminez brings plenty of momentum into this contest as she chase a maiden top-30 scalp, but a well-rested Kudermetova should bounce back from her US Open disappointment.
Top seed Simona Waltert takes on hard-hitting German Jule Niemeier in the Round of 16 of this WTA 125k event in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
They’ve met once before, with Niemeier winning a 2022 Australian Open qualifier 6-1 6-1.
World No.102 Waltert accounted for Darya Astakhova 6-1 6-4 in the first round. She made the quarters of a WTA 125k tournament in Montreux last week after losing in US Open qualifying. The Swiss has been a consistent performer on the Challenger circuit this year.
Outside the top 250 at present, Niemeier was ranked as high as No.61 in 2022 after making the Wimbledon quarter-finals and the last 16 at the US Open.
Notable results have been hard to come by since, however. She did thrash Daria Saville in US Open qualifying (before losing to another Aussie, Priscilla Hon) before outlasting Lucija Ciric Bagaric 6-4 1-6 6-0 in the first round here.
Waltert has a more reliable bank of form behind her and can expect to advance to the quarters.
