Eighth-seeded Colombian Maria Camila Osorio lines up against American 17-year-old Iva Jovic in the Guadalajara Open’s Round of 16.
Osorio outlasted Kamilla Rakhimova 7-5 7-5 in the first round as she looks to put the disappointment of three straight grand slam first-round exits behind her.
The two-time Copa Colsanitas champion is currently ranked 69th.
Jovic put away Katarzyna Kawa 6-4 4-6 6-3 in the first round.
The world No.73 is a star on the rise, chalking up four match wins in five grand slam forays so far and winning the Ilkley Open in June. She’s beaten the likes of Linda Noskova in Cincinnati and Anastasia Potapova in Cleveland, while she defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich at the US Open.
Those recent efforts see Jovic head in as a $1.65 favourite for this one – and it’s hard to argue, with Osorio struggling for consistency since her semi-final run at the Morocco Open in May.
Grand slam winner Jelena Ostapenko and Marina Stakusic square off at the Guadalajara Open for the second straight year.
The pair played out a thriller here last year in their only previous meeting, with wildcard Stakusic pulling off a 6-3 5-7 7-6 upset.
Seeded third here, Ostapenko received a bye to the Round of 16 and is aiming to bounce back from a disappointing North American swing, which culminated in a second-round loss to Taylor Towsend at the US Open.
Canadian Stakusic is still yet to break into the top 100 in her career and has struggled for results of late. But she’s enjoying being back in Guadalajara again, winning two qualifiers before fighting back to beat Polina Kudermetova 3-6 7-5 6-4 in the first round.
The enigmatic Ostapenko is a warm $1.25 favourite to square the ledger, but Stakusic looks primed for another upset.
Coming off a sizeable first-round upset, Aussie doubles specialist Storm Hunter lines up against Colombia’s Emiliana Arango in the Round of 16 at the Guadalajara Open.
The 31-year-old Hunter rolled Katerina Siniakova 7-6 4-6 6-3 first up – her first win in a singles match (of which she has played very few) in 2025.
World No.86 Arango won the first set of her first-round match 6-0 against fifth seed Magda Linette, who subsequently retired.
Arango made it to the quarters of the Abierto Zapopan last week, regaining some momentum after going winless in main draw matches since the French Open.
It’s no surprise to see Arango a $1.50 favourite here, but Hunter is capable of at least pushing this one into a third set if she repeats the performance that tripped up Siniakova, who was a top-30 player last year.
The first edition of the Sao Paulo Open pits top seed Beatriz Haddad Maia against fellow Brazilian Laura Pigossi in the Round of 16.
Haddad Maia is 3-0 against her compatriot – all on clay – including two wins on home soil and most recently at the 2022 Saint-Malo event.
World No.27 Haddad Maia demolished qualifier Miriana Tona 6-1 6-1 in the first round, her first match since going down to eventual runner-up Amanda Anisimova in the US Open’s Round of 16 – a run which saw her break out of a four-match losing streak.
Pigossi, ranked 193rd, rallied superbly to eliminate Elizabeth Mandlik 2-6 6-3 6-4.
With Haddad Maia turning a corner from a frustrating slump, expect a straightforward as she strives towards her first title of 2025.
