Trentham stages an eight-race program this Saturday. Light showers are expected ahead of raceday, but conditions should remain in the Soft range throughout the day.
Track: Soft7 (possibly Soft6 come raceday)
Rail: Out 6m
Selections for each of the eight races below:
Saltburn (#1) has made a good impression in his three starts since arriving in New Zealand, his latest run for 5th against race winners should stand him in good stead for this. He maps to take up a forward position from his low draw, and the booking of in-form apprentice Liam Kauri with a 3kg claim is another positive. Should prove hard to beat.
1. Saltburn (4) 58.5kg34625
Wingman (#5) resumes, last seen running 2nd in April. He looks forward enough for this fresh assignment, with his recent trial win suggesting he’s ready to go. He’ll want the track closer to the firmer end of the Soft range, but at the price he appeals as the play in the race.
5. Wingman (6) 57kg7202X
Just Charlie (#2) was asked to do far too much last start and faded out accordingly. He has trialled nicely since and looks well suited stepping up to 2100m. Looks a good chance of running a significantly improved race here.
2. Just Charlie (7) 59.5kg49X78
Sierra Leone (#14) was a very capable 2yo despite not winning a race. She’s had the benefit of a quiet trial and from her low draw should land just behind the speed. Expect her to run a bold race in a fresh state.
14. Sierra Leone (3) 54kg30X2X
Ziggy Stardust (#7) resumes as a 4yo, having trialled well in preparation for this. From her draw, she maps to land handy to the speed with good speed dawn underneath to tow her forward down the chute. Can run a strong race first-up.
7. Ziggy Stardust (10) 57.5kg2127X
Marotiri Molly (#1) resumes here. She arrives here off a bold trial win earlier this month, and although she carries a substantial impost for a mare, Liam Kauri’s 3kg claim helps her cause. Expect her to be prominent throughout and run a cheeky race in a fresh state.
1. Marotiri Molly (5) 62kg5X40X
Ears Back (#4) showed early speed when resuming at Riccarton, but weakened late. She should strip fitter for that outing and maps to lead comfortably here. If Mereana Hudson can control the tempo in front, she could take plenty of catching.
4. Ears Back (3) 56kg951X6
Monologue (#11) comes into this off the back of a last start 2nd on a testing track. She will appreciate a return to a slightly better surface and the wide draw may prove advantageous by this stage of the day. Expect her to settle back and be finishing strongly late.
11. Monologue (13) 56.5kg130X3
