Sixth-ranked Aussie Alex de Minaur confronts French veteran Adrian Mannarino in the second round at Wimbledon.
De Minaur boasts a 5-1 record in this rivalry, with the last two victories coming on grass – at Queen’s Club in 2023 and in the Libema Open semis last month (6-4 6-0). Mannarino’s sole win was also at the Libema Open in 2022.
‘Demon’ overcame some early resistance to see off Roman Andres Burruchaga 7-6 6-1 6-0 in the first round. He was a quarterfinalist here in 2024 and went down to Novak Djokovic in the Round of 16 last year.
The 37-year-old Mannarino returned to the top 40 after his Libema Open run, while he upset Jakub Mensik at Queen’s Club before going down heavily to Nuno Borges at the Mallorca Championships.
Mannarino brushed aside compatriot Titouan Drouget 6-2 6-4 6-1 in the first round. He has been to the fourth round at Wimbledon three times, but not since 2018.
This is far from straightforward assignment for de Minaur, but the pair’s recent clash suggests the livewire – whose grass-court form in recent years has gone up a couple of notches – will get the job done.
- Prediction: BACK DE MINAUR TO COVER THE GAMES HANDICAP (-6.5) @ $2.02
After a breakout French Open run, 18th-ranked tyro Jakub Mensik is making his way through the Wimbledon draw – but gritty Grigor Dimitrov shapes as a potential second-round banana skin.
Mensik is 2-0 against Dimitrov, winning three-setters at the 2024 Madrid and Shanghai Masters.
Mensik powered into the semis at Roland Garros but it’s been a rocky start to the grass swing, losing to Adrian Mannarino at Queen’s Club then requiring a fifth-set tiebreak to overcome British wildcard Toby Samuel in the first round on Tuesday.
Currently ranked 146th and failing to qualify for the French Open, Dimitrov picked up some grass-court momentum at the Mallorca Championships and parlayed that into a 7-6 6-3 7-5 win over Aussie Dane Sweeney in the first round at Wimbledon.
The 35-year-old was a semifinalist here in 2014 and reached the Round of 16 at the past three Wimbledons.
Mensik is the $1.55 favourite, but his topsy-turvy display in the first round hints that – at the very least – there will be some bumps along the way if he is to overcome the wily Dimitrov.
- Prediction: BACK OVER 39.5 TOTAL GAMES @ $1.82
Fresh off a high-profile first-round run, Australia’s Maya Joint takes on fellow young gun Alex Eala at Wimbledon.
It’s not the first important clash the pair have had on grass: Joint took out the 2025 Eastbourne International final against Eala in a third-set tiebreak.
Despite coming into Wimbledon on a losing streak that stretches back to the Adelaide International in January and slipping to No.87, 20-year-old Joint outlasted comeback queen Serena Williams 6-3 6-7 6-3 – showing great composure in an electric atmosphere.
World No.32 Eala created history as the first Filipino to win a Wimbledon match in the Open era, demolishing Renata Zarazua in the first round.
The 21-year-old, who shot to prominence by reaching the Miami Masters semis last year but has only occasionally reproduced that form, boosted her pre-Wimbledon stocks by beating Donna Vekic, Elena Rybakina and Elina Svitolina on the way to the Berlin Open semis a fortnight ago.
Neither player has been beyond the second round at a major. Eala is a warm $1.28 favourite – and her giant-killing performances in Germany are arguably more significant than beating a 44-year-old playing her first match in four years – but Joint nevertheless is an enticing underdog.
- Prediction: BACK JOINT TO COVER THE GAMES HANDICAP (+4.5) @ $1.92
Aussie Kim Birrell is into Wimbledon’s second round for the first time, where she takes on resurgent 18th-seeded veteran Sorana Cirstea.
They have met once previously, with Cirstea claiming a comfortable win at Indian Wells in 2023.
Cirstea’s rise over the past year has been little short of remarkable. The 36-year-old climbed to a career-high ranking after making the Rome Masters semis – including a win over Aryna Sabalenka – and French Open quarters.
The Romanian saw off Sara Bejlek 6-1 7-6 in the first round on Tuesday as she looks to get past the third round at Wimbledon for the first time.
World No.72 Birrell won a seesawing encounter with Alina Korneeva 6-3 0-6 6-2 to record her first Wimbledon victory.
Birrell beat 2024 Wimbledon champ Barbora Krejcikova (who in turn eliminated French Open winner Mirra Andreeva from Wimbledon on Wednesday) but remains a $3.05 outsider to topple Cirstea.
Even that looks a touch generous to Birrell, with Cirstea shaping up for another deep grand slam run.
- Prediction: BACK CIRSTEA TO WIN 2-0 @ $1.87
