There will be a first-time grand slam winner for the second straight major after Czech duo Karolina Muchvoa and Linda Noskova won their way through to the Wimbledon final. It’s the first compatriot women’s final at Wimbledon (excluding USA) since 1971.
Tenth seed Muchova was the 2023 French Open runner-up, taking Iga Swiatek to three sets in an absorbing final.
The 29-year-old had made Australian Open and US Open semis previously, but this campaign represents her first time past the Wimbledon quarters – and after four straight first-round losses at the All England Club, no less.
Just 21, ninth seed Noskova’s best previous slam run was a quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open in 2024.
Both players arrived in top grass-court form: Noskova beat Jessica Pegula in the Berlin Open final, while Muchova defeated Naomi Osaka in the Bad Homburg Open decider.
Muchova’s path through this draw has seen her overcome Anastasia Zakharova, Zhang Shuai, Manachaya Sawangkaew and 14th seed Osaka in straight sets, while she outlasted 2024 champ Barbora Krejcikova and seventh seed Coco Gauff in three sets.
She held her nerve to take out a 22-point tiebreak in the deciding set in an unforgettable semi against Gauff.
Noskova beat Ella Seidel in straight sets, before surviving three-setters against Camila Osorio and 17th seed Sorana Cirstea. It’s been smooth sailing since, overwhelming 26th seed Madison Keys (6-4 7-6), 25th seed Elise Mertens (6-3 7-5) and 12th seed Marta Kostyuk (6-4 6-4).
Muchova’s aggressive all-court game and shot variety creates an intriguing contrast with Noskova’s baseline-heavy game and flat groundstrokes that are well-suited to grass. Both have a strong serve that has been on song all fortnight.
They have met only once, with Muchova taking out last year’s US Open Round of 32 fixture 6-7 6-4 6-2.
The pair can barely be split in the head-to-head market, but that rivalry edge and Muchova’s previous experience on the grand slam final stage may be enough to snare the trophy.
