Saturday Roughie Tips – September 5, 2026
Looking for the best Saturday roughies as we move deeper into the spring? Ladbrokes are here with the value runners to get behind in the Group races in Sydney and Melbourne this weekend.
We’re getting into the thick of the spring now with plenty of topliners back in action, and last week we managed to find a few juicy placegetters including Salty Pearl (3rd) in the Courtza Stakes, Slipper performed Magic Time coming up well to round out the San Domenico trifecta and old warhorse Mr Brightside who ran a distant but brave second in the Winx Stakes at a big price.
This weekend Group 1 racing lands at Sandown with a star-studded field of sprinters in the Moir, while Sydney is host to a cracking card at Randwick featuring a host of key Group 2 lead-up races looking ahead to the majors.
So, where’s the value across Saturday’s racing cards? We think we’ve found a few forgotten fancies that can blow up your exotics.

Randwick Race 6 – Furious Cherry Ripe Roughie
No. 4 Cherry Bomshell
CHERRY BOMSHELL (2) paying $14 at time of publish in Furious Stakes betting appeals for an improved effort second-up from a low draw.
The Annabel & Rob Archibald-trained Lucky Vega filly won’t be beating the Silver Shadow champ Pembrey, but she’s a massive chance to come back and atone after finishing dead last in that opening leg of the Princess Series fresh.
Before the break, she was in flying form rounding out an impressive hat-trick with a strong upset in the Group 2 Percy Sykes at this track and trip.
She was on pace first-up but faded badly to finish seven lengths off the winner, but she’s one that could improve out of sight with a run under the belt now as she did when saluting by six lengths at Eagle Farm second-up in February.
Unsure what went wrong last time out. Jockey Ben Thompson was miffed and said her chase was short lived, but he’s back aboard and ready to forgive his mount.
Subsequently found out she was in season, so I’m going to give her another go to sort out those hormones and get back to her best.

First-up after four months raced on the pace before fading ran last of 10 in the G2 Silver Shadow Stakes at this track on August 22 over 1200m, on a slow track; 7 len behind Pembrey carrying 57kg at $3.80. Previously second-up favourite; scored a big 6 len win at Eagle Farm on February 4 over 1000m defeating High Authority with 56kg at $1.55. Complete mystery first up and deserves another chance. | |||
Randwick Race 7 – Say Can You Say Value?
No. 9 Soothsayer
Idle Flyer wins the Tramway for mine but an underrated fancy at double figures who can add value to the exotics is the Michael Freedman-trained SOOTHSAYER (4).
The consistent Divine Prophet gelding runs as a seven-year-old for the second time looking to add to his good 1400m record (6:3-0-0).
He’s sure to improve second-up now with a 50% winning strike rate from his four previous starts at this stage of a prep.
First-up here on August 22 he was excellent narrowly beaten by Midnight In Tokyo in the Group 3 Show County over 1200m so he’ll relish the extra furlong now.
This is a tougher race and stronger line-up of rivals than what he’s used to lately, but he’s a good horse on his day proven over the winter in Queensland when he won the Listed Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich from out wide.
Really liked the way he stuck with the task fresh fighting all the way to the line off an on pace run and Freedman’s obviously got a good opinion of him as he was scratched out of an easier race in Brisbane to run in this Sydney Group 2.
Rachel King sticks with; can surprise a few.

First-up after two months held ground to the line 2nd of 8 in the G3 Show County Quality at this track on August 22 over 1200m, slow going neck behind Midnight In Tokyo with 56kg at $3.40. Previously second-up 4th of 13 in a Bm85 at Gold Coast on May 9 over 1200m, 2.5 len behind Sunshineinmypocket carrying 59.5kg at $5. Excellent run first up and looking for this trip, keep safe. | |||
Randwick Race 8 – Concorde Danger
No. 3 Beadman
Some elite short-course specialists and potential The Everest-bound horses line-up in this year’s Concorde Stakes, but for value BEADMAN (11) at 30/1 presents as a genuine Top 4 chance for mine.
The Peter Snowden-trained Snitzel entire was thumped by the Concorde favourite Tempted in the Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint in the autumn but went on to improve and claim victory in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas over six furlongs.
He then went up in grade for the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 finishing a brave fifth only 2.5 lengths off Queensland veteran Rothfire, so he can compete against these rivals on his day.
We haven’t seen him since a flat effort in the Group 3 Fred Best over 1400m when I think he was coming to the end of his prep and the stretch in distance found him out.
Has trialled up only fairly but does have previous Black-Type winning form fresh at Randwick having claimed the Listed Fireball back in March over 1100m.
Gate makes it tough but I’m throwing him into the exotics.

| Has won previously first-up and resumes here after a break of three-and-a-half months. Finished off last campaign 12th of 18 at Eagle Farm in the G3 Fred Best 3yo May 30 over 1400m, soft track; 6 len behind Regal Award with 57kg at $12. Previous preparation first-up won by nose this track LR Fireball March 7 over 1100m defeating Inkaruna carrying 58.5kg at $2.30. Sticky gate first up and others look stronger. | |||
Sandown Race 8 – Bring in the Cavalry
No. 9 Cavalry Girl
We’ve got a host of next best contenders in the Moir but for mine, CAVALRY GIRL (6) is the roughie danger with the fitness edge who ticks plenty of boxes to outrun her double-figure quote.
Tom Dabernig’s four-year-old daughter of Bivouac has been absolutely flying this year and comes in hot off a trio of lead-up wins.
Back in late July she put 4.5 lengths on next over the line Yuuki in Morphettville’s Listed Lightning Stakes (1050m) proving how sharp she can be with the right run.
She then went to Caulfield’s Heath track on August 8 and was emphatic again, claiming a BM100 on a light weight by 3.75 lengths in a pretty solid form line race.
Up in grade at her latest here at the Hillside track on Heavy going, she handled the conditions aplomb and defeated a decent line-up of rivals by a half-length in the Group 3 Norman Carlyon.
This is an obvious acid test, but she deserves her shot, is rock-hard fit, proven at the course and a specialist at the distance (14:7-2-0).
While some of the better fancied will just be hitting their top gear late, she’ll be on speed and Willo will be aboard again making sure her winning streak won’t get cut without a fight.
If the favourite Natural Fling maps well in front, then surely this girl does too at a far better price.

Most recently favourite; raced right near the speed and boxed on; won by 0.5 len in the G3 Carlyon Stakes at this track on August 22 over 1000m in the wet defeating Bazaball Rewarded carrying 56kg at $2.30. The race before that favourite; won by 4 len at Caulfield Heath on August 8 over 1000m in soft going defeating Along The River with 53kg at $2.80. Flying at this trip, can measure up. | |||
Randwick Race 9 – Runner to Help Get the Green
No. 7 Green Spaces
GREEN SPACES (1) isn’t an outright roughie having firmed in from $11 to $9 at time of publish in the Chelmsford Stakes odds, but he still looks the value drawn the rails second-up getting up in trip.
The four-year-old Street Boss entire is being kept safer now as he looks to build on his credible run fresh in the Winx at 100/1 when eighth in his campaign kick-off over an unsuitably short distance.
He’ll improve each run in building to longer-distanced spring targets as the reigning ATC Derby champion, is two-from-three over the 1600m and can finish somewhere in the top five or six now.

Previously second-up got back early 6th of 9 in the G1 Randwick Guineas at this track on March 7 over 1600m, 6 len behind Sheza Alibi carrying 56.5kg at $61. Ready for this trip and further and will be savaging the line. | |||
