Concorde Stakes Tips
Looking for short-distance stars that have winning form over the 1000m distance, first-up runners with a strong record fresh and Group 1 winners kicking off their spring campaigns make the best Concorde Stakes tips.
Backing runners under $10 in the markets, horses that ran in the previous season’s The Everest and returning Concorde Stakes performers are also worth including in your best bets.
To Win: No. 5 Headwall
I do love LADY SHENANDOAH and she’s deserving favourite for her four-year-old debut, but I just cannot go past the value of HEADWALL (5) who is a very good and constantly underrated short-distance specialist getting plenty to suit for his return to the races. Matthew Smith’s gun Dream Ahead six-year-old is yet to win over further than 1000m so this distance is his jam. His strike rate shows that (9:5-1-3) but he’s also got the class, not just speed, to be ultra-competitive fresh. He was enormous over the autumn at the top level without winning putting in massive efforts to run close in the Oakleigh Plate (4th), Newmarket Handicap (2nd) and TJ Smith (3rd) before heading to Perth for the $4 million The Quokka where he went down by a narrow margin to Jokers Grin. Trialling well in Sydney, gets things his way from barrier five and can give this race a shake-up with a potential The Everest slot pending.

The Concorde Stakes is a popular Group 3 short-distance sprint contested at Royal Randwick on Chelmsford Stakes Day in early September each Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
The set weights plus penalties showdown now offers $1 million in prize money having had a major boost ahead of the 2023 edition, and it has been run and won since 1990.

The Concorde Stakes now serves as a potential lead-up into the world’s richest turf race, the Group 1 $20 million The Everest (1200m) taking place at the same track in October.
In 2017 and 2018 the champion Redzel completed the Concorde Stakes – The Everest double twice on the trot and returned in 2019 to become a three-time Concorde Stakes hero.
In 2020 the Concorde Stakes winner Gytrash ran a next-up third in that year’s The Everest results before taking out Rosehill’s Winners Stakes – race renamed after the previous season’s The Everest winner each year.
The 2021 Concorde Stakes winner Nature Strip finally saluted as the odds-on favourite in the event at his third attempt before going on to win that year’s The Everest for Chris Waller.
A new race record time was set in 2024 with Ciaron Maher’s mare I Am Me flying home in a slick 55.97 seconds.
The 2024 Concorde Stakes also produced that year’s The Everest winner with Bella Nipotina improving on her second in the Group 3 to win the first Group 1 edition of the richest turf race in the world.

Horses that ran well in the previous year’s Concorde Stakes are also usually kept safe in betting with returning runners boasting a strong record in the race in the past few years including the three-peat of Redzel (2017-19).
In 2021 Nature Strip ($1.50) finally saluted as the favourite having twice been beaten in the race.
Eduardo ($2.70 in 2022) is the latest favourite in Concorde Stakes betting to win.
