Top seed Aryna Sabalenka and third seed Jessica Pegula square off for the third straight US Open, competing for the first spot in the 2026 women’s final.
Sabalenka boasts a 9-4 record against Pegula. She won the 2024 US Open final 7-5 7-5 and their 2025 US Open semi in three sets. But Pegula has won two of three encounters in the past year – in the Wuhan Open and Berlin Tennis Open semis, either side of Sabalenka’s WTA Finals victory.
Two-time defending champ Sabalenka has extended her US Open winning streak to 19 matches. She disposed of Camila Osorio, Polina Iatcenko, Kamilla Rakhimova and Taylor Townsend in straight sets – dropping seven games or less – but had to dig deep in the quarters.
Sabalenka outlasted Wimbledon champ and sixth seed Linda Noskova 7-6 6-7 7-6 in an epic battle.
After reaching the Cincinnati Masters final with wins over Amanda Anisimova and Iga Swiatek, Pegula has powered into her fourth grand slam semi.
The 32-year-old has accounted for Elena-Gariela Ruse (6-3 6-2), Sofia Kenin (6-3 6-1), Leylah Fernandez (1-6 6-4 6-3), Sorana Cirstea (6-3 6-4) and Emma Navarro (3-6 6-4 6-3).
Sabalenka has reached the final at the past eight hard-court majors. Confirmation Elena Rybakina has usurped her as world No.1 will provide even more motivation to make it three straight titles in New York.
It seems inevitable – on current form – that Sabalenka will wear the ultra-consistent Pegula down; the American needs to find another level that is just not in her kitbag and will be reliant on an off day from Sabalenka.

Fourth seed and 2023 champion Coco Gauff lines up against soon-to-be world No.1 Elena Rybakina in the second women’s semifinal at the US Open.
The head-to-head is one-all. Gauff won marathon clash at the 2022 Canadian Masters, while Rybakina earned a significant psychological edge for this clash with a 5-7 6-2 6-2 victory last month in the Canadian Masters semis.
Two-time slam winner Rybakina had never previously been past the Round of 16 at Flushing Meadows. But on the back of impressive lead-in performances and run to the last four over the past fortnight, she will take the top ranking off Aryna Sabalenka next week.
Rybakina put away Thea Frodin, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, Yulia Starodubtseva and Naomi in straight sets, before recovering from a slow start in a 3-6 6-1 6-4 quarterfinal victory over Qinwen Zheng.
Gauff has followed a near-identical path to her seventh grand slam semi – and second at the US Open.
The 22-year-old beat Zenyep Sonmez, Paula Badosa, Cristina Bucsa and 14th seed Iva Jovic without dropping a set. But she had to save a couple of match points before finishing over the top of fifth seed Mirra Andreeva 2-6 7-6 6-2.
It’s a performance that sees the home favourite installed at $1.72 to oust Rybakina for a place in the championship match. But with both top-tier superstars in such dazzling form, expect this mouth-watering semi to go very deep.
