Top seed Alexander Zverev is gunning for his second US Open final appearance and his second grand slam title of 2026 – but first he has to get past an unlikely semifinalist, world No.50 Karen Khachanov.
Zverev has a 6-3 advantage against Khachanov, winning four of their last five encounters. Khachanov’s most recent win was in the 2025 Canadian Masters semis, while Zverev won their only clash since – later that month at the Cincinnati Masters.
Zverev reached the Wimbledon final on the back of his French Open triumph. After a scratchy hard-court build-up, he needed five sets to beat both Lorenzo Sonego and Quentin Halys.
But the German superstar has since put away seeds Alejandro Tabilo and Luciano Darderi, and quarterfinal bolter Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets, losing no more than 10 games.
Khachanov reached the semis here in 2022 and is an unwaveringly gritty competitor, but few saw this run coming after going 16-18 this season.
The 30-year-old beat Roman Andres Burruchaga and Benjamin Bonzi in straight sets either side of a four-set shock against third seed Felix Auger Aliassime, then outlasted 14th seed Learner in five and beat 28th seed Alexander Blockx 6-2 7-5 3-2 ret.
But Zverev’s grand slam form in 2026 has been top-tier, with Alcaraz and Sinner the only players to beat him. A third straight – and sixth overall – major final appearance beckons.
Prediction: BACK ZVEREV TO COVER THE GAMES HANDICAP (-5.5) @ $1.92
Either Frances Tiafoe or Ben Shelton will get the opportunity to end USA’s 23-year homegrown men’s champion drought at the US Open – and reach a maiden grand slam final – but first a tantalising semifinal showdown awaits.
Shelton is 3-1 against Tiafoe, including a win in their most recent encounter, a 7-6 6-4 result in the 2025 Washington Open quarters.
They have met twice at the US Open: Shelton won their 2023 quarterfinal in four sets, while Tiafoe won their third-round clash a year later in a five-set classic.
After a couple of disappointing New York forays, Shelton has chalked up four-set Tallon Griekspoor, Hubert Hurkacz and Denis Shapovalov, thrashed Stefanos Tsitsipas in three, then ended Carlos Alcaraz’s title defence in a five-set thriller.
The match finished after 3am with Shelton claiming the fifth-set tiebreak. He dropped just three games on serve.
Tiafoe had a five-set scare against Martin Damm Jr in the first round, before putting away Rei Sakamoto, Valentin Vacherot and seventh seed and 2021 champ Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.
He also endured a five-set quarterfinal – fighting back from two sets and 3-0 down in the third against unseeded compatriot Alex Michelsen.
Due to the comparative quality of their quarterfinal opponents, Shelton has emerged as a warm $1.33 favourite to take out this semi. His serve provides a clear advantage and his athleticism is set to frustrate Tiafoe’s trademark shotmaking, retrieving returns that most players can’t.
Prediction: BACK SHELTON TO WIN 3-1 @ $3.50
