Another blockbuster edition of Randwick’s famous mile showdown takes centre stage in Sydney this Saturday, and the Ladbrokes form experts have you covered with our exclusive 2026 Epsom Handicap tips, predictions and best bets, breaking down the leading contenders, top winning chances and value runners in this year’s highly anticipated $1.5 million Group 1 feature.

The Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) is set to deliver another cracking contest, with a deep field of 19 runners chasing glory in Sydney’s premier mile handicap.
Autumn Boy heads Epsom Handicap betting as Chris Waller chases a seventh win in the race since 2012. The talented four-year-old returns to Randwick third-up off a strong Makybe Diva Stakes second and looks well placed from the inside draw with James McDonald aboard.
Waller’s hand also includes Mr Miller, a lightweight chance on the minimum, and proven Randwick performer Lady Shenandoah, while the unbeaten Kiwi mare Well Written has been heavily backed after seven straight wins and shapes as a genuine threat from a favourable barrier.
Other leading hopes include Attica, who gets a significant weight drop after strong lead-up runs, while former winner Ceolwulf, in-form mare Perfumist, and last year’s runner-up Fully Lit add further depth to a fascinating Group 1 line-up.
With proven stars, emerging talent and plenty of value runners throughout the field, the Epsom again shapes up as one of the standout betting races of the Sydney Spring Carnival.

Epsom Handicap 2026 Tips
It’s a cracking and wide-open Epsom field but for mine Chris Waller looks primed to add another chapter to his incredible record in this classic with AUTUMN BOY (1) the one to beat fit and firing from the inside alley.
The classy son of The Autumn Sun returns to Sydney after two Melbourne runs this preparation and appears ready to peak third-up, a scenario that has historically brought out his best.
The four-year-old signalled he was nearing top form when chasing home star mare Sheza Alibi in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes over a mile at Flemington after an eye-catching first-up run in the Memsie Stakes.
Back to Randwick and stepping out over his preferred 1600m, he gets a number of key factors in his favour, including an ideal draw and the return of champion jockey James McDonald to the saddle.
His record at the course and distance is impossible to ignore, having finished runner-up in both the Randwick Guineas and Doncaster Mile, while his elite Group 1 credentials were established with victories in the Caulfield Guineas and Rosehill Guineas last prep.
With recent favourites Ceolwulf and Autumn Glow delivering for punters in the past two editions, there’s every reason to believe Autumn Boy can continue that trend.
On the back of a strong Group 1 performance further south and with Waller chasing his seventh Epsom Handicap triumph since 2012, I’m backing Autumn Boy to hold out the undefeated Kiwi raider.
| 3. Autumn Boy (1) J: James McDonald 55.5kg 12×82 T: Chris Waller | |||
| Dual acceptor. Third-up today and won third-up previously. First-up 8th of 12 in the G1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on August 29 over 1400m, on a slow track; 5 len behind Beiwacht carrying 58.5kg at $9. Second run from a spell 2nd of 10 in the G1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington on September 12 over 1600m, 2.75 len behind Sheza Alibi carrying 58.5kg at $20. Returned good figures in the Makybe Diva, top three player. | |||
The biggest mover in the 2026 Epsom Handicap betting has been unbeaten Kiwi mare WELL WRITTEN (3), who has quickly challenged for favouritism after attracting strong support in the market.
Trained by Stephen Marsh, the daughter of Written Tycoon arrives in Sydney with a perfect seven-from-seven record and looks well placed to continue her rise from an ideal barrier three draw with in-form jockey Zac Lloyd aboard.
The classy four-year-old has already proven herself at the elite level across the Tasman, highlighted by a dominant Group 1 NZ 1000 Guineas victory over the mile and a memorable win in New Zealand’s richest race, The Kiwi.
She resumed in style when taking out the Group 1 Proisir Plate fresh at Ellerslie and is expected to take further improvement second-up, a scenario that has previously produced one of her most impressive victories.
There is no question she faces her toughest test to date against a deep Epsom field, but she maps to enjoy a perfect run just off the speed, handles soft ground, is unbeaten at the mile, and brings the kind of winning mentality few horses in this race can match.
She’s done nothing wrong in seven career starts and comes into the race with all the right form indicators.
Drawn to get every chance and trending sharply in the market, she looks the standout each way danger and can give a huge sight in her Australian debut.
| 6. Well Written (3) J: Zac Lloyd 55kg 111×1 T: Stephen Marsh | |||
| Second run back. First-up after six months won by 1.75 len in the G1 Proisir Plate at Ellerslie on September 5 over 1400m in soft going defeating Alabama Lass carrying 56.5kg at $1.60. Previously second-up scored a big 6 len win in the G2 Soliloquy Stakes at Ellerslie on October 18 over 1400m defeating Little Black Dress carrying 56.5kg at $2.70. Undefeated in seven starts and goes to a new level here, big chance. | |||
If you’re searching for the value runner capable of blowing out the exotics, DECLICHY BOULEVARD (2) looks the standout roughie in the 2026 Epsom Handicap for mine.
The Chris Waller-trained mare comes into the Group 1 in excellent touch after producing a dominant victory over the Randwick mile, carrying a hefty weight and still proving too strong for her rivals.
A stakes-performed mare with plenty of upside, she has returned in terrific order this preparation, opening with a strong third at Goulburn before taking her form to another level when charging home to score impressively at this track and distance last start.
Importantly, she’s now third-up, a stage of the campaign where she has previously performed well, and she looks set to peak on Saturday.
The mile clearly suits, she maps to settle off midfield and conserve energy, and with just 50kg on her back under the handicap conditions, she gets every chance to finish strongly when the pressure goes on late.
Racing in top form, loves the Randwick mile and gets in with a lightweight.
At around the $20 mark at time of publish, she’s the value play.
| 17. Declichy Boulevard (2) J: Andrew Adkins 50kg 15×31 T: Chris Waller | |||
| Third-up today and placed third-up in the past. Resuming 3rd of 16 in a Goul Cup Mbm98 at Goulburn on August 23 over 1400m, 1.0 len behind Just Party carrying 55.5kg at $6.50. Second run from a spell favourite; came from midfield and won by 2.25 len in a Bm88 at this track on September 19 over 1600m defeating Knobelas carrying 59.5kg at $2.50. Racing well. In great shape and ticks a few boxes at the good odds. | |||
2026 Epsom Handicap Same Race Multi Selections
- Top 3 – No. 3 Autumn Boy
- Top 3 – No. 6 Well Written
- Top 5 – No. 17 Declichy Boulevard
AUTUMN BOY (1) for a Top 3 finish looks the banker play in this year’s Epsom. The Waller-trained star returns to Randwick third-up off a superb Group 1 Makybe Diva second and gets every chance from the inside draw with McDonald aboard. A dual Group 1 winner who has already placed in both the Randwick Guineas and Doncaster Mile over this course and distance, Autumn Boy is perfectly placed to peak and should be right in the finish as Waller chases another triumph.
WELL WRITTEN (3) to also run in the trifecta appeals as an outstanding inclusion after the unbeaten Kiwi raider surged into Epsom calculations. The Marsh-trained mare brings a perfect seven-from-seven record to Sydney, including multiple Group 1 victories across the Tasman, and looks ideally drawn in barrier three with Zac Lloyd aboard. Unbeaten at the mile, proven on soft ground and expected to improve second-up off her Proisir Plate win, she has all the credentials to make a successful Australian debut and finish in the placings.
DECLICHY BOULEVARD (2) for a Top 5 performance looks a terrific value inclusion after her dominant last-start Randwick mile victory carrying a big weight. The Waller-trained mare is peaking third-up, drops to just 50kg under the handicap conditions and returns to a track and distance that clearly suits. With strong recent form, a favourable lightweight and a race shape that should allow her to finish off strongly from midfield, she appeals as an excellent chance to sneak into the top five at attractive odds.

Epsom Handicap FAQs
The 2026 Epsom Handicap is scheduled to run at Randwick on Saturday, October 3, 2026, as Randwick Race 8 at 4:10pm (AEST) as the headline event on the 10-race Epsom Handicap Day program.
The Epsom Handicap is run over 1600 metres, making it one of Australia’s most prestigious Group 1 mile races and a major feature of the Sydney Spring Carnival.
The 2026 Epsom Handicap carries $1.5 million in total prize money, with the winner taking home the lion’s share of the purse in one of Randwick’s richest handicap events.
No. 3 Autumn Boy heads the Epsom Handicap betting after drawing ideally and returning to Sydney off a strong Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes performance. The Chris Waller-trained four-year-old has been well supported by punters through Ladbrokes.
Our best bet for the 2026 Epsom Handicap is No. 3 Autumn Boy, who looks ready to peak third-up and boasts outstanding form around the Randwick mile. His inside draw and the return of James McDonald only add to his appeal.
Undefeated Kiwi mare No. 6 Well Written rates as the standout each-way chance. The Stephen Marsh-trained four-year-old is seven-from-seven, has drawn perfectly in barrier three and arrives with elite Group 1 form from New Zealand.
No. 17 Declichy Boulevard shapes as the value runner of the race. The Chris Waller-trained mare was dominant over the Randwick mile last start and gets in with a light weight, making her an attractive roughie at double-figure odds.
Yes. Recent favourites have enjoyed success in the race, with Ceolwulf ($4 in 2024) and Autumn Glow ($1.75 in 2025) both winning as market elects, suggesting punters should not be afraid to back the horse on top of the betting.
Chris Waller boasts the strongest record among this year’s trainers and is chasing his seventh Epsom Handicap victory since 2012. He has a powerful team engaged in 2026 led by favourite Autumn Boy.
Yes. Mares have an excellent recent record in the race, highlighted by Autumn Glow’s victory in 2025, while several talented female gallopers including Well Written and Lady Shenandoah are aiming to continue that trend in 2026.
