With only one day to go until the race that stops a nation, this year’s Melbourne Cup field looks as open as ever, and Ladbrokes racing analyst Bec Hill is here with her expert 2026 Melbourne Cup preview, tips and best bets.
For the first time in the race’s storied history, prize money will be paid right back to last place but as we all know, the $10.2m Group 1 Melbourne Cup offers far more than financial rewards.
A place in history, international recognition, and for most, the opportunity to fulfil a lifelong dream.
This year, Joseph O’Brien looks to have a very strong hand in our premier race with five of the eight international contenders, while the in-form Ciaron Maher stable will saddle up a record seven runners.
I think those two stables have it between them and I’ve narrowed it down to my top four Melbourne Cup betting selections!
Irish mare GOODIE TWO SHOES (10) returns looking to go one better after finishing runner-up last year. The Joseph O’Brien trained daughter of Fastnet Rock has followed a very similar preparation, coming through both the Santerra Stakes at Fairyland and the Lillie Langtree at Goodwood, as she did in 2025, and she appears to be going just as well.
She has been given the extra run this time and while she failed to feature, she did settle at the tail, and it looked a nice hit-out to keep her ticking over in readiness for this. Wayne Lordan will again do the steering and as she jumped from barrier 20 last year, I’m not overly concerned with gate 19.

| Returns from a 52-day let-up. Most recently ran last of 10 in the G3 Kilternan Stakes at Leopardstown on September 12 over 2414m, 9 len behind Arabian Crown with 62kg at $34. The run before that ran on strongly from last on the turn and won by a nose in the G2 Lillie Langtry Stakes at Goodwood on August 1 over 2816m defeating Santorini Star carrying 61kg at $9. Ran very well in this last year, more weight now, place probably best again. | |||
Another one of Joseph O’Brien’s contenders is SONS AND LOVERS (1). He’ll have to carry top weight of 57.5kgs, but he’s earned it the low draw should help to offset that, as he’s set to enjoy a soft run throughout.
He’s yet to salute over the two-mile journey but his only attempt saw him run a very credible fourth in the Dubai Gold Cup back in March. Prior to that run, he was victorious in the Group 2 Red Sea Turf over 3000m at Riyadh.
He comes here seven weeks between runs, having finished second in the Kilternan Stakes and he does race very well fresh. The winkers go on for the first time and he’ll be in it for a long way.
| 1. Sons And Lovers (3) 57.5kg44512 | |||
| Comes here off a 52-day let-up. Last start 2nd of 10 in the G3 Kilternan Stakes at Leopardstown on September 12 over 2414m, 2.25 len behind Arabian Crown with 63.5kg at $15. The race before that won by a head in the G2 Prix Maurice De Nieuil at Longchamp on July 14 over 2800m defeating Parachutiste carrying 59kg at $2.60. Top weight but brings classy international form and should go very well. | |||
JUJA KIBO (11) lines up on the back of back-to-back wins and gives every indication he’ll see out 3200m. The Ciaron Maher trained gelding was strong through the line when finishing second in the Kingston Town and given a picture-perfect ride in The Metropolitan, he got the job done comfortably.
Jumping from the outside gate and carrying top weight in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup here at headquarters, he settled well back before unleashing a powerful finish down middle to score. His only previous attempt at this distance came in the Sydney Cup earlier this year, after which he was reported to have a slow recovery. A very versatile galloper, he’s in career best form and he looks a live chance.

| Chasing a hat-trick. At the latest run won by 0.5 len in the G2 Moonee Valley Cup at this track on October 24 over 2500m defeating Kings Valley carrying 58kg at $7.50. Before that ran on from midfield and won by 1.75 len in a G2 The Metropolitan at Randwick on October 3 over 2400m in soft going defeating Aethelwulf with 56.5kg at $5.50. Flying off moderate tempos, if he can convert that to two miles he’ll run well. | |||
Chasing his second Melbourne Cup win, James McDonald jumps aboard Irish raider TRUSTYOURINSTICT (2). The son of Churchill is proven over the two-mile journey, having won over the distance early on in his career and he’s since progressed strongly through the grades.
He delivered an impressive last to first victory in the Curragh Cup in July, then returned from an eight-week let up with a solid fourth in the Irish St Leger. The wide draw should pose little concern, as he’ll settle back and conserve his energy for a strong late finish.

Brings a lovely profile and strong international form, and the man in the saddle goes okay too. | |||
