Inaugurated in 1956 as the BATC Labour Day Cup, the event has been known as the Lord Mayors Cup since 2005 and gained Group 3 status in 2000.

The Lord Mayors Cup now serves as a key lead-up into the Group 2 $1.2 million The Q22 (2200m) held on Stradbroke Handicap Day.

Without A Fight (2023) completed the BRC Lord Mayors Cup – The Q22 double before franking the form with a Group 1 Melbourne Cup victory at Flemington that November.

In 2025, New Endeavour won the Lord Mayors Cup before a second in The Q22 quinella.
