Gunsynd Classic Tips

Good Gunsynd Classic tips include looking for three-year-olds coming off a top three run in similar events over the winter in Brisbane.

The colts and geldings make the best bet in Gunsynd Classic tipping with Galroof (2002) the last filly to beat home the boys in the event up until Just Feelin’ Lucky (2025).

Backing runners drawn barrier nine or less is also a key Gunsynd Classic betting tip with Hopfgarten (14 in 2014) and Bases Loaded (15 in 2024) the only winners to do so from a double-digit barrier since 2009.

A key support race on the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival feature meeting, the Gunsynd Classic is contested over 1600m at set weights and offers $200,000 in prize money.

Racing on the day is headlined by the Group 1 $3 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m). The Group 2 $1.2 million The Q22 (2200m) is the second richest race on the card.

Other top races held on Stradbroke Handicap Day include the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) for two-year-olds, the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (3200m) for the stayers, and the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1300m) for the fillies and mares.

The race was inaugurated in 1989 as the Doomben Classic, before being renamed in 2010, and gained Group 3 status in 1997.

It is now named in honour of champion miler from the 1970s Gunsynd, known as the ‘Goondiwindi Grey’, who recorded wins in some of the country’s biggest races including the Epsom Handicap (1971), Doncaster Handicap (1972) and Cox Plate (1972).

Gunsynd Classic Betting

Gunsynd Classic betting markets are led by the season’s top-performing three-year-olds with previous winning form over the mile.

Any last-start winners in similar grade winter races in Brisbane also sit high up the Gunsynd Classic odds each season, as do the interstate raiders with three-year-olds prepared outside of Queensland having a dominant recent record.

The Chris Waller-trained Rediener (2023) was the latest last start winner to take out the Gunsynd Classic in Brisbane.

Ayrton ($1.75 in 2021) followed by Kiss Sum ($3.30 in 2022) are the last favourites in Gunsynd Classic betting to salute for the punters.

In 2023 Yellow Brick ($1.35) jumped odds-on in Gunsynd Classic betting but couldn’t run down the upset winner Rediener ($9.50) when finishing a devastatingly close second.
