The 2026 WA Oaks meeting was abandoned after Racing WA called off the full Ascot card scheduled for Saturday, 28 March, with 27mm of rain already fallen and up to 35mm more forecast as the remnants of Cyclone Narelle swept across Perth, forcing the Oaks and Melvista Stakes to be moved to the following Wednesday.

The Group 3 WA Oaks is a popular 2400m staying showdown run and won at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse in late March each autumn racing carnival.

The event takes place on the same day Sydney hosts Day 1 of The Championships at Randwick led by the $4 million Doncaster Mile.

The WA Oaks is a set weights event for three-year-old fillies offering a generous $300,000 in stakes.

The race was inaugurated back in 1953. Unlike other events that gradually grow in status the WA Oaks has been slowly demoted. After running as a Principle Race from 1953 – 1978 it was a Group 1 event from 1979 – 1991 before being downgraded to a Group 2 until 2006 and then a Group 3.

The best fillies out of the WA Oaks field may opt to take on the boys next race in the Group 2 WATC Derby (2400m) the following month over the same track and distance.

The latest fillies to complete the WA Oaks – WATC Derby double are the Grant Williams-trained Delicacy (2015) who also went on to score the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) – Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) double in Adelaide, Tuscan Queen (2020), and Machine Gun Gracie (2025).

In 2025, the WA Oaks and WATC Derby quinella featured the same two fillies with Machine Gun Gracie doing the double and Funchal running second in both features.
